SAND LAKE, Michigan (AP) -- A boy drove his mother's car to a video store in the middle of the night, police said -- and he's all of 4 years old.

Although unable to reach the accelerator, the boy managed to put the car in gear and make his way to the store, a quarter-mile from his home, about 1:30 a.m. Friday, Sand Lake Police Chief Doug Heugel said. Finding the store closed, the youngster began a slow trip home.

Weaving and with its headlights off, the car got the attention of Officer Jay Osga, who first thought he was following a car that had been left running at a gas pump.

He flipped on his lights when the car turned into the apartment complex and struck two parked cars. The boy put the car in reverse and struck Osga's cruiser.

The mother told police her son tried to drive the car earlier after she let him steer from her lap.

"He's 4 years old. His mom didn't even know he was up," Heugel told The Grand Rapids Press. "I don't think he even realizes what he did."

No charges will be filed against the boy or his mother, Heugel said.

Thankfully nobody was hurt, so it's sort of a funny story. He must have read this kids book...

Once I saw someone forget to put on their parking brake at the gas station and their car rolled into the cashiers booth. Heh.

I saw this news story yesterday which reminded me of the time, my sister who I guess was around 3-4 knocked my dad's car out of gear while parked in the gararge and the garage door was open. It started rolling down the driveway (which was on hill). She took out our mailbox and the neighbor across the streets mailbox (thank goodness there wasn't a car coming down the street at the time!). Haha, I think my mom said she was doing yard work in the front yard, looked up and saw my sister in the car. My sister waved to her and told my mom she was going to the store

My wife and I read that story yesterday, and even though we weren't together, we both thought the exact same thing---"That's Cal in 2 years." He's not even 2 yet and he's fascinated by the car. He loves to sit on my lap and pretend he's driving. Now, while most kids are probably like that, he strikes me as the kind of kid that's taking mental notes and just waiting until he can reach the keys hanging by the door. His nickname isn't "Little Monkey" for nothing. :D

Damn. My part of suburbia isn't nearly as interesting.
