Interwoven series of events led to the arrest of Col. Williams

Investigation; Winter tire treads said to be key clue

By ALLISON CROSS, Canwest News ServiceFebruary 11, 2010

Over a six-month period, residents of the region surrounding Canadian Forces Base Trenton in eastern Ontario bore witness to four serious crimes involving women.

The recent arrest of a senior wing commander from the base, Col. Russell Williams, has revealed he is the suspected perpetrator and possible link between each crime.

Last September, two women were the victims of separate violent home invasions and sexual assaults in the small community of Tweed, Ont., about 60 kilometres north of Trenton, and some 300 kilometres northeast of Toronto.

The victims were bound to chairs and photographed and although Williams lived nearby, Ontario Provincial Police did not search his home.

According to a warrant viewed by Canwest News Service, authorities did search the home of his neighbour, Larry Jones, on Oct. 29.

Police cleared Jones as a suspect but in November, news came of another violent crime.

Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, a 38-year-old flight attendant at CFB Trenton, had been murdered. Her body was found on Nov. 25 in her Brighton, Ont., home, 15 km west of Trenton.

A few months later, on Jan. 29, word spread that a young woman, Jessica Lloyd, 27, from Belleville, 20 kilometres east of Trenton, had gone missing.

Unconfirmed reports indicate she was abducted from her home and Williams's vehicle may have left behind distinctive tire tracks in the process.

OPP and Belleville police set up a road block Belleville on Feb. 4, and stopped and questioned motorists for 11 hours.

According to Jones, police were looking for the winter tires with a distinctive tread design, which would link Williams to Lloyd's disappearance.

Williams was arrested in Ottawa Sunday and was interrogated by the OPP's criminal behavioural analysis section.

Reports have indicated Williams led police to the location of Lloyd's body, although police have yet to confirm this detail.
