I'll tune back in when the waves start hitting Hilo.

CNN needs to get their act together:

Quote:
Saturday's temblor comes about six weeks after an 7.0-magnitude earthquake devastated parts of Haiti and killed more than 220,000 people. The Chilean quake, at magnitude 8.8, was 700 to 800 times stronger.

what's the problem? do you know that the intervals are not 1:1 throughout the ratings? a 7-mag is much stronger than a 6-mag, so i don't think its crazy to think that an 8-mag is that much stronger. but if you know for sure i'm interested in learning more. thanx.

That's because quake magnitudes are calculated on a logarithmic scale. Thus, a magnitude 8 quake releases 33 times the energy as a magnitude 7 quake, and a magnitude 9 quake releases 33 multiplied by 33 times the energy of a magnitude 7 event. The quake that hit Haiti on Jan. 12 was magnitude 7, and the Chile quake was magnitude 8.8 -- which works out to about 500 times more energy.
