not a geologist but it's pretty self evident: you shift a piece of the puzzle, the other ones are going to move too..

that's sensible and i get that. my question to you not a geologist would be, how many times in history have the earthquakes been this close together? generally you hear of after shocks felt in other places, but not earthquakes in other places. so is this common with bigger earth quakes or representative of some underlying behavior.

I don't think there's any set behavior for them other than one can trigger the next and so on. I dunno tho. I don't like earthquakes. I've felt enough of them for my lifetime! The Northridge quake was terrible and that one wasn't nearly as huge as this latest one in Chile.
