This man claims he gavi Goering the poison pill to impress a girl? And that the statute of limitations is long past relative to doing anything about it even if they could prove it to be true?

That would be ridiculous if they prosecuted him had the statute of limitations not run out. It's not that big of a deal. The guy was going to be executed anyway...it's not like he tried to help him escape.
A very naive 19 year-old nonetheless.
