Space Shuttle Damaged on the Launch Pad
By MARCIA DUNN, AP Aerospace Writer

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - With the countdown for Discovery in its final hours, NASA was dealt a setback Tuesday when a window cover fell off the shuttle and damaged thermal tiles near the tail. But the space agency said it probably could fix the problem in time for Wednesday's launch.

The mishap was an eerie reminder of the very thing that doomed Columbia — damage to the spaceship's fragile thermal shield.

So, we haven't even started lift off yet and something feel off and broke the tiles? What kind of monkeys did we use to improve safety on that damn thing?

I saw something on the news the other day, very briefly, where they said they fixed this and that from past experience and didn't expect any reoccurance....or some such.

.weak.

Considering the funding we give to NASA, it is amazing they can maintain the gas crew much less getting the thing to fly. I for one wish we would put a lot more into the space program. One of the few things I liked about Bush was the 5 minute deal he had to reach Mars. I wish it would have lasted longer. Not because I have some Trekkie love for space, but I do think that our government should constantly be striving to advance humanity as whole. To push us past our current boundaries. That is what Kennedy did so well, winning the hearts and minds. Believing in a certain future, instead of dwelling on past injustice. Civil rights not affirmative action. The Moon not oil wells. I am not a fan of Kennedy in general, but I think that is the sort of dude we need leading this country. Someone who pushes us forward towards something that unites us. Cheesy as hell I know.

Man, I am so close to just saying that NASA needs a serious budget cut so public and private institutions can pay more attention to other issues.

Space is becoming privatized as it is, so maybe we really don't need the government involved. I just have a certain attraction to the government spending money on things that I can actually see. If tax payer dollars are going to projects, I want to see it go towards things that advance humanity as a whole. I doubt welfare will ever lead to the next step in evolution but maybe a space program has a chance.

Why? The majority of people live completly boring lives in which they never rode a horse, visited a foreign country, or went over a 100 yards out in the ocean. It may be crazy, but it is damn exciting. I would give both nutz and a half inch off my dick to go to space.

This is what I'm really hoping for. I felt SpaceShipOne was much more important than the run-of-the-mill NASA launch.

Again, I would personally like to see humanity advance without the assistance of the gov't.

Me too, I would love to go to space someday. Hopefully more pioneering is made in the space tourism industry so it isn't just limited to the super-rich.

I agree, but I don't think there is enough money to be made through space travel for it to be profitable in the private sector. If the Concord(is it Concordia it has been so long) cannot survive, I just doubt something as expensive and dangerous as space travel is going to work. If the moon was made of diamonds, then maybe, but the private sector is looking at space as a disney land ride not as a scientific sort of thing. You really need the billions that a large government has to make it work. Or Bill Gates to give up computers and aim for the stars. I just don't think the baloon guy from Virgin and the guy who programmed Doom are enough.

I think you misunderstood my post there. I should have highlighted "in a space shuttle."

My problem is not with space or space travel. My problem is with the space shuttle only- and how little shit keeps going slightly wrong. The goddamn thing has blown up twice... you would think they could make it so that panels of this and pieces of that don't fall off anymore.
