So Obama is talking about arming the rebels in Libya. Because arming countries in the middle east has always worked out in the past for us.

The people in Bahrain and Yemen and Saudi Arabia where the US actually has considerable interest are saying

What the Fuck?

Personally, I'm hoping he just dosen't agree to send in ground troops under any circumstance and perhaps either way it won't last too long.

Any military history buffs know whether a "conflict" has ever been won without boots on the ground, or using an arial offensive exclusively?

Define "won". Don't you have to have an objective to actually win something?

The objective I guess in this case is for Gadaffi to leave. Well he said no. So, either the rebels kill him..."preferred" or US/nato bombs kill him and we cover it up internationally to say that rebels actually killed him you know to disuade personal attacks on our own despot.

What is interesting to me is that all these other wealthy western nations who "care" so much about Libya that they want to enforce a no fly zone are not doing dick becuase it's expensive meanwhile the country that gives out 60 billion dollars a year in foreign aid when it's 14 trillion in debt takes up the cause against a country we don't particularly give two shits about.

Yeah, that too.

I don't really know what "winning" entails. I'm pretty skeptical that this will remain an air-only offensive, though.

What if we just send Charlie Sheen to Libya as an envoy? He'd probably be as successful as Jimmy Carter anyway.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say there are already special forces units on the ground over there.

Those rebels are not the most competent bunch around, even with all the bombing done by the allies, Gaddafi troops still advance over them. This is what happens when the population is isolated from guns, they lack ammo and accuracy to revolt properly.

Fuck it, just bomb Gaddafi already.

The Miracle at Dunkirk agrees with you.

Let's arm ALL the middle eastern rebels now so that in ten years when we invade their countries we can fight against those weapons we gave them.
