LOS ANGELES (AP) – Authorities say fugitive Boston crime boss James “Whitey” Bulger has been arrested by the FBI near Los Angeles after 16 years on the run.
Santa Monica Police Sgt. Rudy Flores says his agency was informed of the arrest by the FBI Wednesday.
Flores says the FBI had been conducting a surveillance operation in the area. He gave no details of the arrest.
The 81-year-old Bulger is wanted in connection to 19 murders. He has been the subject of several books and was the inspiration for the 2006 film “The Departed.”
Bulger and his girlfriend Catherine Greig have been on the run since 1995 and were thought to still be traveling together.
The FBI in Los Angeles didn’t immediately return a phone call seeking comment.

Such surprise as the arrest of this guy will generate among his fellow criminals will be easily outweighed by the benefit to the world at large of having one less stupid person roaming free on the planet.

This is off base. He didn't want to "make a difference in the world". He was a surpriser. His whole thing was to make people surprised by doing ridiculous stuff like putting a dead body in a quarry or embezzling money or robbing banks. He was also, by most accounts, a really nice guy. I've never met him and can't say with any certainty that he was a "criminal", and honestly, neither can you.
All that is beside the point that coming into a thread where people are expressing their sympathies to obnoxiously proclaim how little you care that someone is dead is petty, childish and fucking classless. You're better than that, or at least I'd like to think so.
