*for president. I still place some belief in the importance of voting in smaller local elections, and many of the local/statewide propositions and millages and such.

seriously, how did we get to a point where its completely pointless what any of these people say or do?
i think you're confusing the pointlessness and repetitiveness of much campaign rhetoric with "what any of these people say or do."
as for "say," what the president says on gay marriage very likely will influence opinion and the politics of the issue in the future, helping make it more likely gay marriage will be legal in more places and helping continue to further society's acceptance of gays (also possibly helping gays feel more accepted--seeing the president come out in favor of gay marriage might give some needed hope to a bullied gay teen, for instance).
as for "do," repealing DADT, intervening in Libya, getting pre-existing conditions covered, stimulus programs, all these things have a point and influence real lives, no matter how you feel about the worthiness of any of these acts.
of course, if you think the world economy will be collapsing soon anyway, then i guess nothing might make a difference in the grand scheme, but if you find alternative futures plausible, these words and actions do matter. yes, they're not usually world changing, but most things aren't. i would dispute "how did we get to a point" by saying that it's always been sort of like this.

I interpreted EE's comments to mean that since Team Red and Team Blue are the only possible options and people are dogmatically set on their side, no real debate can ever occur.
