Multi-award-winning Maskandi musician Khulekani Kwakhe ‘Mgqumeni’ Mseleku died in December 2009 after drinking a poisonous mixture he received from a traditional healer.
However, confusion reigned supreme after someone pretending to be Mseleku returned home to Mquthu in northern KwaZulu-Natal last week Saturday, and his fans and family were wondering whether he was resurrected. It has since been found that the entire situation was a hoax.
Thousands of his fans from across the country visited his home to see him, and he was shown to them for the first time on Sunday. According to TimesLive, he said to his fans, “I am Mgqumeni. And I know that some of you might not believe, but yes, it’s true. It’s me.”
The musician apparently looks quite frail, but added to his welcome that he was suffering in “the place where [he] was kept with zombies”. He added that he had not died, but was kept in this place, though he cannot remember where it was.
Some people were happy that he had returned, while others expressed anger, as they were concerned that someone was trying to perpetrate fraud. TimesLive reported that Mgqumeni’s grandfather was convinced the man was his grandson, so it seems that even family can be tricked…
eNews revealed on Monday that the man posing as Mgqumeni was arrested and that the entire charade was a hoax. The man was in police custody for his own safety.
