Soccer historically is the poor mans sport, or 'yobs sport'. least in this part of the world. hence the Ultra right wing fan factions in the UK and Europe and accompanying violence at local and international games and finals, even up to the world cup.
A great book for those unfamiliar, detailing right-wing soccer violence and its links to the National Front in the eighties, is Among the Thugs by Bill Buford.

Umm...psychobain seems pretty on the money here. You put sports in politically unstable or poverty stricken areas of the world, and you're bound to get violence, especially if the police are incompetent or corrupt. It just so happens soccer is the most popular sport in the world. Everywhere but the U.S. and India, you'll find soccer fans outnumbering fans of any other sport, including regions involved in the Arab Spring.
The places that have historically had the worst soccer violence have also had the most violent street gangs, but does that mean freedom of assembly should be curbed?
