From Drudge:
BUSH: HOLDING THREE JOBS 'UNIQUELY AMERICAN'
Tues Feb 8 2005 9:27:01 ET
Last Friday when promoting social security reform with 'regular' citizens in Omaha, Nebraska, President Bush walked into an awkward unscripted moment in which he stated that carrying three jobs at a time is 'uniquely American.'
While talking with audience participants, the president met Mary Mornin, a woman in her late fifties who told the president she was a divorced mother of three, including a 'mentally challenged' son.
The President comforted Mornin on the security of social security stating that 'the promises made will be kept by the government.'
But without prompting Mornin began to elaborate on her life circumstances.
Begin transcript:
MS. MORNIN: That's good, because I work three jobs and I feel like I contribute.
THE PRESIDENT: You work three jobs?
MS. MORNIN: Three jobs, yes.
THE PRESIDENT: Uniquely American, isn't it? I mean, that is fantastic that you're doing that. (Applause.) Get any sleep? (Laughter.)
-She should have punched him in his arrogant face. Anyone else think having to work three jobs to stay above water is "fantastic?"

Dude, this fucker doesn't know what it's like to have an RPG shot at you. It's not like he cares, this triple-working woman is contributing greatly to the economy. I think this is the only time I'll ever mean the H word, but I think I hate him.

It's almost surreal, like some weird dream, thinking that he's actually the president. Man, this country's got its collective head up its ass. Can't wait to see how LittleWing defends this one.

I'll try to explain what may have been going through his head:
President's Thoughts: "Got to keep this positive...positive...positive"
Ms. Mornin: "I'm working three jobs."
President's Thoughts: "That sucks...got to make this positive"
I don't think he was trying to be condenscending or cruel, but was caught in a bad and uncomfortable moment and was trying to make a positive spin on it. He is not at his best when he is unscripted, but lets face it, this would be awkward for anyone who does not have to work three jobs to make ends meet. He tried to keep it positive and even at the speaking engagement, it may not have seemed like as big of a deal as it seems when taken out of that context.
Not that I am defending him in the slightest, but I can see how this can happen. He is a rich man who was born into money and lives without fear of making ends meet.
But so does John Kerry.
My point being is that very VERY few politicians really know what it is like to have to work three jobs and be one step away from living on the street. This was a good experience for the president, and I hope he takes something away from it. As for the awkward comment, I place this down there with Cheney's stupid outfit at the Aushwitz Memorial as another moment of poor public display, and not something which defines this administration...yet.

Bill Clinton would have said the right thing, and the lady would have offered him her services for being such a compassionate man.

I don't think anything like : "Must keep this positive" went through his head. I think the guy is so far removed from reality and what us reg'lar folks have to do to survive that he thought his comments were wry and and not at all offensive. I'll go one step further and make the assumption that he actually thought those kinds of comments are what endear him the the public.

I guess anything is certainly possible, but I'll try to give him the benefit of the doubt for this time.

Why? Why this time? Why ever?
