my wife's a doctor, so i've been talking w/ her and friends about this "case" and from their perspective if the patient is incompetent then this exact thing would happen here. so that got us all thinking that the only reason this is news is b/c its happening in a place w/ socialized medicine.

What if the patient is competent? Does this mean their are limits to "my body, my choice"? And those limits are imposed when only harming yourself?

if a person is competent then they go to hospice and die. that's always a choice, and, save for people screaming "death panel," it will always remain an option.

I just think there's going to be a huge bias for the medical community to find the person incompetent and then force their services on the patient.

competency is a blurry line, to be sure, but believe me that with staffing being what it is at most hospitals (and getting worse) nobody is seeking opportunities to force services on people b/c it ties up beds.
you have to remember that unnecessary services occur more often b/c doctors/hospitals want to protect their ass, not b/c doctors/hospitals necessarily want to do them.

This issue here, is that a woman was abused and subsequently felt out of control of her own life. I think that's understandable. She doesn't want to die; but she doesn't feel worthy of any pleasures like food. It's all it the note up there ^^^. I think the judge made the best decision that he was able to. I hope the treatment works!
