I'd have to say I've probably had my mind changed on a subject, although that's a sort of loaded term--I'd probably rephrase it to the more broad this board has influenced my thinking on issues.

The god and philosophy debates with cb and buffalohed and others were good. The Austrians and other various free market types here did a lot to help me think critically and more clearly about motives, the nature of interactions, and institutions, especially the monetary system. Even if I no longer buy into the Austrian theory on crisis with its explicit, exogenous monetary causes, working through the theory and its implications helped me find flaws in more mainstream theories, and later working through what I thought to be the flaws in Austrian theory helped me find other more convincing theories (this board wasn't my only exposure to Austrian business cycle theory, but it introduced me). The environmental/energy threads have been pretty useful, too.

Part of what keeps N&D from reaching its potential as a learning or altering event, to me at least, is that there is a broad range of background knowledge available on the board but that it remains largely underutilized. I tend to look at political events or news-making moments as learning opportunities...I think 90% of my interactions regarding economics on this forum have come in the form of asking questions to people who know more than I do. When I read a thread here, it's usually pretty entertaining and has plenty RM humor...but it's not very information heavy. Most of the discussion is moment-specific, opinion-laden, and full of one-liner comebacks. I could get from reading the comments section to any news article (unless it gets linked to by Drudge :shake: ). This seems like a great forum for making light of politics, and that's usually what I come to it for. But in my mind, I always perceive "N&D" as being just like that: in quotes.

Littlewing responded to me once. It was something about presuming we should get the best from our government and nation, but it often plays on my mind.

I personally think this place has a nice balance of quick, snarky one-liners and deep, thought-provoking discussions. It's nice to know a place like that exists on the internet.
