I know. It sucks. It's an academic publisher that usually just sells to libraries and specialists. The outside reviewers who took a look told them should make it a mass market book, but they didn't listen If all goes well they'll release it in paperback in a year. |

I clicked the link, all excited to up my political sophistication, and realized that costs as much as a Derpy Hooves. |

I agree with this, but I also wonder why human beings can't bear to give themselves more credit in the face of God or gods because our faculties are actually pretty far from limited. Quote: Any god that couldn't stop it isn't God. The blame game! If there is no "God" then human beings are subject to their own reasons! |

I Hail Randy Moss wrote: I do want to start reading essays by Jean-Paul Satre, and maybe C_B's hero Bertrand Russell. Get a little variety. Much of Russell's work is available for free. For example, here's is a decent collection of web links: http://www.users.drew.edu/~jlenz/brtexts.html Or, if you have an e-reader, just search his name and you'll find plenty of his books can be downloaded at no cost. As for Sarte, good luck! I've read very little of his work. |

stip wrote: yeah, I'll fall hard for that kind of stuff every time. In response I'd say this though, I doubt very much the magnitude of what you and the others experienced there will ever come close to balancing the scales of what was taken from the lives of the victims. Evil acts give us the opportunity to do good, but when has the good ever outweighed the evil? And why should the victims have to suffer like they do so you could feel uplifted? I am an atheist for a few reasons. One was that i decided that the idea of god just didn't make sense. And I used to feel superior to believers for seeing through the myths. Then I decided that made me a dick, and some of the smartest and wisest people I've ever known (as well as several of my political heroes) were sincere believers, and so I got over that. I don't believe, but I don't really think of myself as superior to those who don't anymore, nor would I want to interfere with the ways they cope with grief and infinity (I guess I'm doing that here, maybe, but this is a space that is also inviting this conversation). But the problem of evil has long been a fundamental sticking point for me. Any god that couldn't stop it isn't God. Any god that would allow that isn't worth my worship, and any god whose logic exists beyond the moral comprehension and reasoning of man doesn't need it. Why not? Maybe he just needs redefining. We expect God to hold to the standards of the Judao-Christian God, with his 'attributes' of ominpresence, omniscience etc. that we've given him, but what if those things are just imposed upon the biblical text? Made up? What if 'God' can't stop these disasters? You'll say "Maybe he doesn't exist." Well, maybe he doesn't. But maybe he does, and he's merely 'Dog' backwards? The question of why we would need to worship Dog is an interesting one. |

If you redefine the Judeo-Christian God, is 'he' still God? |

If Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus, Jews, polytheists and pantheists have anything to do with it, yes. |

It depends what you need God to be in order to call him / her / it 'God'. There is no inherent definition of the term. It's just a word. |

If you ask anyone - believer or not - they can 'define' "God" and their definitions would probably all sound extremely similar. It's the same concept in most religions. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/god |

the idea that a god needs or wants us to worship him is pretty insane. |
