self-parody in the face of mortal danger
In all seriousness though, it's a bit weird. We (close-in DC suburbs) were suppose to be in the middle of it right now, but the storm seems to be waiting until the middle of the night to come to this area. I put up plastic and some water barriers around the house and ventured out to get some 40x60 tarps at home depot yesterday for the block so that my neighbors didn't have to go to the store while they were preparing. We slept in the basement last night, just in case it came in early, with the baby in the pack-n-play. It's her first birthday tomorrow, so I am kinda hoping we have power to keep the heat on.
I hope everyone on the east coast is warm and safe.
I'm going to start posting in the Pearl Jam forum if you keep this up, b_i

feel free to speculate on when the power goes out here if you like - I'm thinking 4pm-ish
I've got 5 minutes after dinner goes in the oven. Say... 5 after 5?
I figure once the sun starts going down and it gets noticeably colder so the average temperature inside my house can settle at about 50 degrees sans heat

I like the way you think.
What are your thoughts on candles vs flashlights?
I love the fire danger factor of candles - which at least would help with the heat situation.

Haha, batteries are expensive. With all of the power outages we've had recently, my wife bought a bunch of wall mounted candle holders. We're going medieval, tonight.

Good luck to you guys. We get haboobs and monsoons here. During our last monsoon, our trampoline ended up in the pool of a neighbor who lived two houses down the street. It's now secured to the yard with tent spikes. Not nearly as serious as a hurricane, but makes for some nasty clean-up.
This is a reader-submitted photo of a haboob rolling into PHX that ran in my old paper.

I hope he doesn't turn into one of those people where everything in the house is 'x'.
You know, like the lady who likes cows so everything is a cow pattern. Then you end up seeing them on some Saturday afternoon HGTV program featuring weird and wacky houses.

there's a bunch of old trees in my neighborhood, many of them within falling distance of the roof - so with a little luck, I'll be camping outside while still in the livingroom
