I've been disappointed with Obama's use of drones for sure, as well as his breaking his other promises. I doubt any other president we would/could have elected would do things differently though. Americans have no problem with war for the most part, but we hate own troops dying, and this allows us to have our cake and eat it too. Throughout our history the story has basically been that if something will allow us to kill others with less risk to ourselves, we're going to use it.

I think Americans have no problem with what is perceived as a "just" war, though in the GWOT that's a vague concept, and I don't see a logical contradiction in using drones to fight a "just" war to minimize causalities on our side. For example, if Assad were to use chemical weapons on the Syrian rebels, drones would be the logical choice if we decided to intervene. The problem I have with what we are currently doing with drones it is that it appears from an outside perspective that the ease of using our drone tech has made us less discriminating about the targets we hit and lowered our concern for preventing civilian causalities. Maybe because of the video game like detachment from the actual act of killing... I'm not qualified to guess, but we cannot claim the moral high ground in the GWOT if we continue what appears to be a reckless disregard for civilian lives.
