EAGLES LOST MOSS "AT THE WIRE"

We've heard from several readers today about reports in Philly from Gcobb.com and the radio host at WIP who hates us that the Eagles made a run at signing receiver Randy Moss.

We've looked into it, and it is 100 percent true.

The following explanation is based on our discussions with multiple league sources.

The Eagles, as reported elsewhere, offered a higher annual average than the Patriots. The Eagles also offered more guaranteed money than did the Pats.

But it was a day of high drama. The process went back and forth between the Eagles and the Patriots. At one point, the Eagles thought they had him. Then, it looked like the Pats had him. Then the Eagles. Then the Patriots.

One source said that the Pats won Moss "at the wire."

Moss, as we're told, was afraid to leave a place where he's happy after being unhappy for so many years before that.

The Eagles, as we understand it, knew that Moss was inclined to return to New England but decided to be aggressive.

And we greatly admire the Eagles for trying. Our good friends in Philly would have been elated with such a move -- and they should be happy that their team tried so hard to get a guy who could have had as big of an impact as Terrell Owens did in 2004, if not bigger.

The next question becomes whether this prompts the Eagles to re-double their efforts to pry receiver Larry Fitzgerald away from the Cardinals. There has been plenty of chatter about the Eagles trying to pull off a trade, and after getting so close to securing Moss there likely could be an increase groundswell of support for the franchise to do whatever is necessary to land a guy who in time could be every bit as good as Moss.

Gaffney signs 1-year, $2 million deal. i'm pumped, the O is set.

Jason Webster signed earlier today and I see him as Gay's replacement.

Unless Rosie signs elsewhere, which isn't likely to happen any time soon since he's still healing, nothing has happened this offseason that wasn't expected to happen.

:D, Jason Webster.... cue the toughness comments now. cue... he's a good tackler.

When he's on the field (and that's rare) he tackles well. Cardboard cutouts are better in coverage. He's the Dante Stallworth/Peerless Price of cornerbacks only with less actual talent. They both essentially steal money. My guess is he's the emergency fall back corner incase they don't find one or two better in the draft or free agency. He's not terrible in zone or at nickle corner. Just don't ask him to cover more than 5 seconds and especially no bump and run.. on average he lines up 15 yards of the line of scrimmage so the 7 yard out is open ALL FREAKING DAY he can't stop it. Hopefully they didn't pay much. I'd have gone for Brian Kelly long before Jason Webster. Infact if Jason Webster was the only cab driver in Manhattan and I had to go from the upper West Side to the Lower East side... I'd freaking walk.

I'd rather replace Gay with Chevis Jackson. Good cover skills and they are both from LSU. Yeah it's not like they lose much with Gay at all... but geez. Jason Webster... maybe they are just bringing him into compete or play nickle. That's what I hope for your sake.

Liability is probably the best term I can use for Webster when the balls in the air. Good tackler, good in run support.... which leads to the injuries... bad to horrific in coverage if you can call what he does coverage.

I contemplated putting Tank Williams on my list, but figured that Meriweather was staying at safety. Maybe he'll be a corner afterall.

Nailed this one though, I hope he gets signed to a poison-pill-filled contract:

After delving into the unrestricted free agent market in recent days, the Patriots are now considering a move with a restricted free agent. Team officials are scheduled to host Carolina linebacker Adam Seward on a visit at Gillette Stadium on Thursday.

Seward (31 games, 2 starts) has primarily been a backup over the last three seasons for the Panthers, who run a 4-3 defense. In New England’s 3-4 scheme, the 6-foot-2, 248-pound Seward would project to play inside linebacker.

As a restricted free agent, Seward was tendered at the low level by the Panthers. That means that if the Patriots sign him to an offer sheet – and the Panthers don’t match – it would cost New England a fifth-round draft choice, the round in which Seward entered the NFL in 2005.


Reiss doesn't point it out, but Seward was the teammate of one Ryan Claridge while both were at UNLV (in the schools 3-4 system). The pats drafted claridge, but he didn't last long, hopefully Seward would be a better fit.

Reynaldo Hill would be a great RFA signing. A 7th is hardly anything.

If you're willing to part with a 3rd rounder, the Pats could also go after the Broncos' Domonique Foxworth.

the kid Green in Arizona would be awesome, but he's got a 1st round tender.

I heard they were talking to Robert Horry about picking him up before the season only to run him out on a few plays... you know to guarentee they win a championship :D
