The Sox might as well mark those 3 games against the Marlins down as losses right now! Gibbons is gonna go 13-15, 4 hrs, 12 rbi in the series.

I mean considering the criticism pnjguy had for the Red Sox, I wonder how he'll react to this... not to mention that the Whities haven't done anything but dump Swisher & Vazquez.

1) The White Sox are not facing the Yankees and Rays in their division.

2) The White Sox are trying to cut payroll, unlike the Red Sox.

3) The White Sox are not competing for a world series, unlike the Red Sox.

4) The White Sox are positioning themselves for 2010, unlike the Red Sox.

Completely different situations and if you can't see that, i'm not going to bother arguing about it, and if i was a Red Sox fan, i would rather have Colon than Smoltz, to be perfectly honest.

1) true, 89 wins did win the AL not-quite-east-or-west
2) the Red Sox have increased their payroll? news to me.
3) really? they're in MLB, but they won't compete for the WS if they get in the playoffs... I'll mark that down.
4) how have the Red Sox taken themselves out of position for 2010?

I didn't know we were arguing, I assumed you'd just post a crying smilie b/c the signing was such a bad idea, but I guess I was wrong. And Colon is a waste of time, at least in Smoltz, you know that he'll pitch out of the pen in order to stay on the playoff roster b/c he cares about winning.

1) Okay

2) Didnt say they raised payroll, but they're certaintly not trying to cut payroll. If they were, why were they in on Teixiera?

3) The White Sox are not gearing up for a title run, i don't know how else i can put it.

4) Again, i never said they put themselve out of position in 2010, but they're in a "win now" mode every year, unlike the White Sox.

Can't argue with the last point, but if you're counting on either guy, you're in real trouble.

2) the way you phrased it made it sound like you thought the Sox were spending a lot more this season. Obviously, if they signed Teixeira they're looking very different.

3) that's a very different statement.

4) that's not the way it reads.

4a/5(?) Colon has been worth $6.3 million or less 3 of the last 4 seasons. Smoltz has been worth $19 million or more 3 of the last 4 seasons. Forgive me for putting a little more faith in John Smoltz than Bartolo Colon.

*at those links, at the bottom of the player's page it has a "value" chart. the last 2 columns show "dollars", which equals the players worth, and "salary", which shows what the player was paid that season.

But Smoltz is 42 and coming off major shoulder surgury, those charts don't account for that. Again, both are likely to not be factors this season or ever.
