i saw a similar baseball game thread, just thought i'd ask about soccer...

i finally joined the 21st century and bought a PS2... was wondering what your opinions are on the best soccer game.. not one of those street soccer games, a real one. I'm usually a fan of all the EA games (FIFA 05), but i saw a few others out there (winning eleven, world cup something or other, 989)

i dont need to have every single club team from the paraguay and greek soccer club league or anything like that.. just looking for the typical national teams, a nice world cup tourney mode, and the better euro-leagues (english premeire, italian, bundesleague, etc..)

what are everyones opinions? thanks

I think the last soccer game I played was FIFA '97...or maybe it was '96. It was pretty sweet, though. Finally a game that could give my thumb blisters like the old NES controller. :)

If I'm not mistaken, FIFA 2005 doesn't have a World Cup mode. At least that was the case with previous FIFA games. I guess it makes sense because the World Cup is every 4 years. But what sucked is that not even FIFA 2002 had a World Cup mode, even though that's when the last World Cup was. You had to buy FIFA World Cup 2002 for that, but that game sucked because it only had international teams. There is an option in FIFA 2005 to create your own tournament, so you can always do that. I haven't played any other soccer games besides the EA Sports ones, but I think they are the most comprehensive soccer games on the market.

Winning Eleven 7. Or 8. Stupid name? Sure. But playability is much, much better than what the EA FIFA games have to offer.

An interest in the professional game is most definitely not required to enjoy these games.

I wouldn't touch a 989 sports game with a 10 foot pole so that should at least eliminate THAT option.

im wondering about that new fifa street from ea..anyone play it yet..i like the street series, but the games start off fun and get way too easy when you build your teams up...

ea soccer..reminds me of a funny story....we used to play the old one, and it was fun because not only could you beat your oppenent, but you could push buttons after you score to make fan noises, horns, and someone yelling "goaaaal"..one night after a party i played my old roomate..i was beating him..and pounding on the buttons yelling goal, honking horns, and it was becoming obnoxious..he looked at me, got real mad, whipped his dick out and took a piss all over my other roomates television..he replied "thats what i think of this game", and went to bed

The Winning Eleven series is generally regarded as the best soccer games on the market. I don't usually play soccer games myself, but from people I know who do, this is what I've heard. From what I understand, they represent the actual sport better than the others.

My favourite is FIFA 97 from the megadrive, but you won't win each league before it loses its memory.

It's the European and Japanese name for the Sega Genesis. Just like the NES and SNES are called the Famicom and Super Famicom in Japan.

Fifa 98 was fantastic, they pretty much crapped out after that.

Without a doubt.... It's made by Konomi and owns all current soccer games. If you havent played it, check it out. The only downside is no online play.
