here's a question for those who are familiar with amateur wrestling. I was watching Vision Quest the other day, and I was wondering are the wrestling scenes/sequences in this movie authentic? Or are they completely fake like something out of Karate Kid?
Also, just how realistic (or unrealistic) it is to drop that much weight in that short a time period?
BTW, I love this movie........
I've seen Matthew Modine at MSG for Knick games a few times, and he's a good sport when my drunken friends yell out references to the movie.

I was just thinking about this movie yesterday. I wrestled for 12 years. I found the movie and wrestling sequences very realistic. I'm pretty sure i counted up the points for the match at the end of the movie and the scoring was correct. As far as dropping weight. I'm not sure how much weight he lost, but my junior year in high school i was wrestling in 112 weight class. I think I weighed about 111. Wednesday morning my coach asked me to drop down to 103. By saturday weigh-ins i was just under 103.

ive never seen the movie, but youd be surprised how much people will cut in only a few days. ive seen kids be 5 pounds over weight after practice the night before a match and still make weight. i think the most ive ever lost in 24 hours like 3 pounds.

All the wrestlers at my school put "Vision Quest 2005: see you at the top" in their AIM profiles and talk about their "Vision Quest" at school all the time and I never knew what it was from until now, thank you.
Wrestling is an f'ing cult at my school. The coach is a madman.
And one of my friends just bought a rubber suit for dropping weight. He tried it on today and lost 2 pounds in 20 minutes
that scene with Louden getting ready for schute always gets me fired up.

Dropping weight is very common (and very dangerous), even at the earliest stages of wrestling.
Many experienced wrestlers are already very lean to begin with, so after a couple of pounds of water weight, dropping too many more pounds over a week's time can be severely damaging.
Those rubber suits can be deathtraps for people if they don't know what they're doing. The body overheats and can cause heart failure pretty rapidly. Anyone of you familiar with wrestling, even at the high school levels, knows that they are some of the most intense training sessions for any sport.
Vision Quest was pretty accurate, as afr as I can remember. It's been awhile.
But there was a time when Lunatic Fringe was the opening music for at least one wrestling team in every ten mile radius after that film.

I wrestled in HS in the late 80's. I think it may be more like at least two wrestling teams in every ten mile radius, and I think even then the movie was a few years old.

Nah, I've counted the scoring, it's off by a couple. And I'm pretty sure that Louden ends up in neutral when he never got an escape off of Shute.
As for cutting weight, the most I've ever cut was 40 pounds wrestling in college, and the most in 24 hour period was 9.5 pounds. But then again, that's colllege and not high school.

there is one major error in the last wrestling scene...it is only a major error if you know wrestling rules. i forget exactly what it is...but i think it is something about loudon starting in the refrees position when it should of been neutral. or soemthing in that nature. but other than that the movie is incredible. i love wrestling (high school and college) i have been part of it my whole life, and vision quest is a great movie for it. there is also another great wrestling movie out there called reversal...it is an independent film...but a good one...here is the website for it
