maybe if they would have made better trades when they were unloading some of those guys, they wouldn't be in such bad shape.

That isn't even that good of a team.
Jeff Suppan?
Dye, Damon and Beltran didn't help out that much when they were there. It's been a lame duck since Brett retired.

they got angel berroa (who should bounce back from last year and be a decent SS for them) for damon, mark teahan and john buck for beltran, pretty much gave dye away for nothing and lost suppan to FA.
i think its tough to get decent talent in return when everyone in the league knows you're going to lose the guy in 2 months.

they should hae gotten more than Berroa than Damon. instead of taking back an overpaid/overrated closer (Roberto Hernandez), they should have tried to re-stock the farm system.
As you mentioned, Dye for Neifi was an awful awful deal.......
The Beltran trade was weird in that the GM INSISTED on players who played specific positions (3B and C). as if they were one or two players away from the playoffs....
why not insist on young pitching? or just focus on stock-piling the best available players?
I know they are at an economic disadvantage but when it comes to making these deals, I don't quite understand their logic sometimes.
