CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Carolina Panthers Todd Sauerbrun and Jeff Mitchell and former player Todd Steussie had steroid prescriptions filled by a West Columbia, S.C., doctor now under investigation by federal authorities, according to "60 Minutes Wednesday" report.

In a release Tuesday, the CBS News show said the players all had prescriptions for testosterone cream filled within two weeks of the Panthers' appearance in the 2004 Super Bowl.
In addition to the cream, which is banned by the NFL, Sauerbrun - one of the league's top punters  - also obtained syringes and the injectable steroid Stanozolol, which is also banned by the league.

The prescriptions were reportedly written by Dr. James Shortt, who is the subject of a Drug Enforcement Administration probe for allegedly prescribing steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs.

Mitchell, a center, filled a testosterone prescription seven times, while Steussie, an offensive lineman now with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, obtained 11 refills over an eight-month period in 2004, CBS reported.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney has said the team is cooperating with a federal subpoena that sought contact information for several players as part of the probe of Shortt. He has said he is not aware of any of the team's players testing positive for steroids.

Hurney did not immediately return a call from the AP seeking comment Tuesday.

According to a report last month in The State of Columbia, Shortt has been under investigation since May.

In September, authorities raided Shortt's Health Dimensions office and Congaree Pharmacy near the Columbia Metropolitan Airport. State and federal agents seized computer data, at least 21 boxes of patient and medical records and 256 audio cassettes, the paper reported.

The "60 Minutes Wednesday" report also includes an interview with a former employee of Shortt, Mignon Simpson, who says she personally shipped human growth hormone to NFL players and that possibly a half-dozen players received hGH from Shortt.

There is no reliable test for hGH.

CBS said Mitchell and Steussie did not respond to repeated calls and letters seeking comment. The network said that when it contacted Sauerbrun by phone, and asked him about Shortt, the punter said, "I like the guy very much."

Ten minutes later, CBS said, Sauerbrun called back to say he had been confused and that he did not know Shortt.

Is Sauerbrun the guy that almost chopped his foot off with the axe in the locker room? Or was that the Jags' punter I'm thinking of?

Sauerbraun graduated from West Virginia so anything is possible with an axe.

What a douche that guy is. I knew him when he played lacrosse for Ward Melville back in the day. I knew he was on steroids then too. However, a punter, some offensive lineman and another crappy player isn't reason for the NFL to panic or to compare it with the problems baseball has. Now if Owens and McNabb or somebody else is caught then i would have no problem with the NFL getting bashed to death by the press or fans. Until then....baseball will continue to feel the wrath, mostly because their "stars" are the ones being outed

That's right...that WAS him...forgot about that...

Plus Sauerbrun was actually franchised last year...I mean...who franchises a punter?

You've got to be kidding me. You don't think there's a steroid problem in the NFL? Do you see many people that are the size of linemen, tackles, or TE's outside of pro sports? Give me a break.

Did you even read my post? When did i ever say that there aren't steroids in the NFL? Of course there are, there always will be. For the 800th time i will explain again. The difference between the problems with steroids in the NFL and MLB is that a lot of the "stars" and record breakers in baseball have been accused of or have been caught taking steroids. I don't believe the stars of the NFL are taking steroids. In my opinion Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Randy Moss, Michael Vick, Marvin harrison etc.. aren't on roids. If any of these guys were caught i would be extrememly surprised and would hope the league would make an example of them by banning them for a year or two. Baseballs popularity exploded in the mid 90's because a lot of their big name players were cheating. One of the greatest records in all of sports was broken because of cheating. The best player in MLB obviously cheated. If some dopey 350 pound lineman took steroids i woulodn't be surprised and i don't think it is that big a deal. Although these lineman are important to their teams they don't represent their sport, they aren't on the cover of magazines, they aren't their sports icons. See the difference? Probably not cause you always just assume and never read my posts.

The difference between the NFL and MLB concerning steroids is if you get caught in the NFL there are serious consequences. I think it's second offense and your suspended for a quarter of the season. No sports league will ever be able to stop players from taking steroids. The best they can do is severely punish offenders.

It's a 4 game suspension for a first offense. And yes, steroids will always be around. The difference is that MLB turns a blind eye to it and their drug policy is a joke.
