I know we had a thread for last year, so I thought there was enough interest for one this year...

So, Everton lose today to Villarreal, 1-2, which means they'll have to score at least two goals in Espagne to actually play in the Champions League. I can honestly say that I'm not surprised that they lost to Villarreal, and I don't expect them to advance to the group stages. Villarreal ooze quality. Everton's best chance was to work for a 0-0 scoreline today at Goodison. I just don't think it's meant to be for Everton. I suppose UEFA Cup games will be little consolation.

Rangers topped the Cypriot team (Anorthoisios??) 2-1, which is a good result. I think they'll advance to the group stages, which should help them widen the gap between themselves and Celtic.

Man Utd. topped Debrecen, 3-0. They're taking care of business, I suppose. Were there really that many empty seats at Old Trafford?

Juve will be stong contenders this year if Vieira replicates his form of 3 years ago. At 29, there's no reason why he shouldn't.

Chelsea have to be up there with Mourinho playing fantasy football. And I don't mean on the pitch.

Urd haven't a prayer. Arsenal haven't a prayer. Liverpool haven't a prayer...

oh wait...

Sounds awfully familiar ;)

There were about 25,000 empty seats.

Also, Villareal's second goal was great.

Haha, well put. It's funny to think that the last two teams to win the CL are hardly referred to as the best teams in Europe (for their respective seasons).

I agree with you about Vieira. At 29, he's in his prime! I think he's plenty of hard tackles and box-to-box runs left in him.

Damn, that is a lot of empty seats.

I heard there was around 16,000 empty seats, which when you consider what the theatre of nighmares holds (is it 65-70k?) and the fact that it was a Champions league qualifier against a bunch of part time plumbers or whatever they are, anyway Utd were always going to stroll through the game. That's a crowd of 49-54k.

There will be less people there when it comes to the early rounds of the Carling cup this season.

Haha, I know. I think that if Celtic and Rangers were ever to get their way and switch to playing in the EPL, they'd finish mid-table every year.

Do Celtic even get to try to qualify for the UEFA Cup now?

And if Rangers do make it to the group stage, I think they'll be finished off after 3 games. Scottish teams simply lack the quality that is necessary to succeed in Europe, and I'm not sure why. Scotland used to produce such good players, and teams!!

Nope. The losers in the 3rd round enters the UEFA-cup, not the losers in the 2nd round like Celtic were.

No one thinks Chelsea will win it? I don't want them to, but I think they will.

That would be my worst nightmare...

They once again were so lucky in the Premier League,
newcomer Wigan held them for 90 minutes at 0-0, but no, Crespo had to score in injury time to give them a undeserved victory once again. I hate that team.

Bayern Munich's first two games in the national championship were quite impressive so I'd say there's a good chance of them advancing far in the Champions League.

I feel that Bayern Munich, along with Juventus, AC Milan, Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Manchester United, always have at least a fighting chance of winning the Champions League. Those clubs are consistently among the best in their domestic leagues, and they have a lot of experience in the Champions League.

Haha,
Anderlecht, I hate them,
last year they had 0/18,
I hope they do as good as this year,
and it looks quite possible with Betis, L'Pool and Chelsea.

and Man Utd is coming to Lille, which is about 10km from my home! I'm going to see that!!! Wooohooo

Don't Lille play their home games somewhere else because their stadium is under construction?

Barcelona got it good.

Isn't there a stipulation about no group having two teams from the same country?

You're right. Read it too just after I posted this. They'll play them in the Stade de France in Paris. 200km from here is still not too far. I'm going to see United. Finally, after seeing em last time in 2000 at Old Trafford. :)

Yes, but that wasn't for Liverpool. They were considered not to be an 'English' team as they didn't qualify for the CL through their own competition. So that rule didn't apply for them.
