he signed the third highest contract in the history of baseball.
I'd say somebody appreciated him at some point.

this is how manny is.... goes on incredible streaks. He'll hit 8 home runs in 10 games. then hit 1 in 10 games. Not to say he's streaky, but that's the way he is. All this always adds up to around 40 HR's and 120 RBI's. Every year a candidate for MVP but having Ortiz on the same team takes away votes.

I've been watching this guy since he came up....and the only thing that keeps him from being a Mays/Aaron/Williams immortal is his own lack of concentration.
and FYI, he had 3 seaons to win the MVP before Ortiz arrived.......

thanks i realize this, i've been following the red sox my whole life (well most of it, probably not when i was under the age of 10). just saying the guy is consistent. if you had an mvp over the last 10 years, he would win it.

I completely agree. Against the Jays the other day he hit two homeruns and everyone talked about how awesome a game he had. They didn't mention that he booted 2 easy fly balls and made a baserunning error that at the time was pretty pivotal... that's when it was a close game. He's one of the scariest hitters I've ever seen, but he's FAR from the whole package.

sorry, but I don't buy it. He's been known to completely tank seasons down the stretch when he feels like it, and his defensive lapses are legendary.
MVP over the last 10 years? I'd say that belongs to a certain SF outfielder.

ok first of all the first one yesterday they spoke on baseball tonight at long lengths about and the complete consesus was the sun can be rediculous. it happens.... not to say he hasn't had his bonehead moments but yesterday was something different.

he's had his share of bad plays i know.... but his arm is above average. and by no means do i see his play in the field as a major downside.
also i'm basing my last 10 years comment on AL MVP.
because A-Rod played SS at an elite level, he would be the AL MVP over the last 10 years IMO.

Okay, so one fielding mistake, one half fielding mistake and one baserunning mistake.

He would be far better as a DH, I don't care how good his arm is. Tonight, for example... he was 1-for-2 with a mammoth homerun, then he was pulled in favour of defensive replacement Jay Payton. He never would have left the game and could have come through where Payton failed at the plate in the eigth. It's great that he likes to play in the field, but is it really worth it when it hurts the team?
