I've gotta admit, i was a little worried opening day when he got rocked by the marlins. Honestly, i didn't think he could make the transition back into the rotation after being a closer for so long. But today he has 15 SO against the Mets, Braves leading 1-0 in the Bottom of the 7th. Even if you don't like the Braves, you gotta admit Smoltzy is tough.

his arm will be dead by the all star break.

I've been mowing grass all day so I missed everything after the 1st. How many runs did Smoltz give up? I just heard on tv that he struct out 15! His curve in the first inning was NASTY!

Smoltz is my favorite baseball player and I am still excited that he's back as a starter.
15 SO is really good, but it really sucks that the Braves lost to the damn Mets.

J. Smoltz (L, 0-2) 7.1 IP 8 hits 2 R 2 ER 0 BB 15K 1 HR
That loss was the offenses fault for not getting anything up on the board for Smoltz... John pitched a great game, he just didn't get any offensive support... call it 'Randy Johnson '04 Syndrome'

Baseball fan or not; Braves fan or not; Smoltz fan or not, you must give credit to Smoltz. He has as much heart, as much desire, as much drive as any athlete in his respective sport. He gives it his all, all the time. If half the professional athletes had Smoltz's attitude, sports would be better.

That is why he's my #1.

So how tough is he really?
Think back to 2003 NLDS between your boys, the Cubs and Braves. Smoltz went 1-0 with 1 save. He came off the DL just days before the start of that series. Every pitch he threw he was in agony. He grimaced with every pitch and took his dandy time in between pitches. He got the job done. Just a few days later he had surgery on his right elbow. That sounds like a gamer to me. Sounds pretty tough, too.
