Just curious if any of you guys/gals are into lacrosse. Preferably, indoor box lacrosse (NLL). It has a pretty big following here in Philly, with our team the Wings (6 time champs!). We also won the MLL (outdoor field) championship over the summer with the Barrage. If you ever have a chance to go to a game...GO! There is a cool message board located at http://www.wingszone.com/nllmb (although it is being worked on as we speak) where you can discuss all aspects of lacrosse. It is a really cool sport and hopefully will be a mainstream sport soon. Feel free to discuss here or on the NLL message board.

I always enjoy watching the college championships when they are on ESPN. Used to watch a decent amount of games here until the stupid athletic department cut the sport. I've only caught bits and pieces of the indoor game, but it seemed entertaining enough that I'd watch if it was televised.

Yeah it sucks that they (the NLL) don't have a regular season television deal, although NBC just aired the all-star game last week and they are going to air the Championship game in May. Hopefully it is a step in the right direction and they pick up more games next year. It is an awesome sport. Nothing quite like seeing it live.

My godson has been playing for two years, he's only in the sixth grade. Its very interesting to watch, although I can't claim to understand what is happening most of the time, the coodination involved is intense.
From an elementary school level, its sort of taking the place of football in areas where parents fear kids will get too seriously injured, and its seems to be an activity where, if you're not the cream of the crop relative to playing soccor, you can get onto the team and learn alot and have fun.
The school where I substituted for a year started a team that same year. They've been at it for going on three years now and it really gives kids a chance who would not otherwise be able to get onto the "standard" teams (soccor, football, basketball, baseball) an opportunity to really shine.

The Bandits are very good (don't know about gold standard at this point though). You were close, you have 3 championships (maybe one this year?).

Yeah, I've been to one game in 10+ years so I have no idea.
you should go to one.....you have 2 of the best players in the game right now, and this may be the year for that 4th championship.

The Score (in Canada) plays quite a few games.

Yea, lacrosse is amazing.
In regards to the NLL, I've always wondered why ESPN chooses to show shit like poker (yes, poker is cool, but it's not a sport), bowling, and billiards over non-mainstream TV sports, like box or even college lacrosse. It seems to me that watching box lax instead of billiards would be way more interesting...

I could not agree more....especially when i turn on espn and see the national cheerleading competition....WTF?
they are trying to negotiate with nbc for a game of the week next year, but nbc is hesitant to pull the trigger (yet they show the afl like its gods gift to us).

they show the final four which last year was pretty amazing. This is the sport I should have played in HS, I know I would have loved it. Almost every one of my friends played in college, my bro has a division II campionship ring. I think that is pretty cool

My brother played HS and club college lax and i cover the sport all the time. It's one of my favorite games to watch because the action is very intense and up and down. It's actually quite an easy game to understand once you've seen it a few times.
What are the rule differences with box lax from normal outdoors 11v11?

Rich-
There are a lot of rule differences from box to field, too many to list here. The basic overview is its 6 on 6 (goalies included) and is very similar to hockey or basketball. You have a 30 second shot clock and 10 seconds to get the ball over midfield. The same penalties that apply in hockey apply here.....holding, cross-checking, roughing, interference, etc. There are 4 15 minute quarters and a sudden death overtime if neccessary. The nets are also 4 feet by 4 feet 9 inches (quite a difference from field..)
I like field and all, but the box game is way more exciting. One of the best sites to check out is http://www.lacrosse-network.com/outsidersguide/. (especially the Lacrosse 101 section). I know the webmaster and he knows the game better than almost anyone. There are also some other good sites out there if you do a search.
The best way to see what its all about is to go to a game (if you are close enough to a team).......you will be hooked!

Well, this thread kinda died (as i expected).....but if anyone cares this weekend is the 1st round of the playoffs for the NLL.
West 1st round - Friday night, Colorado Mammoth at Arizona Sting. Winner travels to face the #1 seed, Calgary Roughnecks.
East 1st round - Saturday night, Rochester Knighthawks at Buffalo Bandits. Winner travels to face the #1 seed, Toronto Rock.
My beloved Wings didn't make the playoffs, so if the championship game is in Buffalo or Rochester, I will be traveling to the game. If any of you live near these arenas and are interested in going to the game, drop me a line and we can meet up or something.
At this point its.......Go Bandits!

It did die, but I just finally read your response to the box v. field game. I still love the field version, but I haven't had a chance to really see much box (that sounded really dirty). I love photographing this sport, it's so fast and you can get some amazing images if you know what you're doing.
