Since the coverage of the Spelling Bee is on ESPN I assume this is the corect forum.
These kids can spell!! I only knew how to spell a few words. Anyways, this Canadian girl spelled this word that contained the letter "Z" and she pronounced it "zeb" instead of "zee." The announcers said this is how Canadians pronounce it. Canadians are starting to scare me a little more every day. I'm goint to be terrified by the time I go there for the tour.

In Britain they pronounce "Z" as zed. I think we are the strange ones. I still don't understand how the spelling bee is a sport. Then again, poker is on one of the ESPN channels at all times, so I guess I'm not surprised.

Let's think about this one... english originated outside of the USA. Outside of the USA, the letter is pronounced 'zed'. So basically, the Americans changed it... so you are the scary ones. The rest of us are normal. It's like spelling words with "ou" (e.g. colour.)

what about qualifiers like "pretty much?" it's been made obvious in this thread americans pronounce the word differently. it doesn't take rocket science to figure out any further elaboration in my post would have been for the birds.

What about the kid who finished second? He would say, "yes!" whenever he got a word he had previously seen. He (and several other students) also, several times, asked the judges, "is that a [insert definition here]." I found that insane. Its hard enough knowing how to spell these words but knowing the definitions is another story.

That kid was cool. Wasn't he like 11 or something?
And right on about knowing how to spell and the definitons to these words. That's pretty amazing.
