It's been a little while since the last one, and these threads seem to spark some pretty solid debate:

Gary Payton:

We all know his story. Unlike with Reggie Miller, I'm on the fence as to whether or not GP is a Superstar. It's hard to say fairly cuz he played for my hometown team for most of his career....I'm interested to see some outside opinions.

I'm leaning toward no....He had an outstanding career with the Sonics, but I don't think he ever even started an All-Star game....where does the rest of the country stand? I think you either love him or you hate him....

No.

It was bullshit every time ESPN said the '03-'04 Lakers had 4 future Hall of Famers on their team.

Not anymore. But he was.
And he's on a rocket sled to the hall of fame.

He is a star
He was super

So, he was a superstar, but not since he left the Sonics.

Yeah...he's really tarnished his career since leaving Seattle. That got compounded by the fact that he couldn't win a ring with L.A.

"The Glove" was an icon here in Seattle, and for a while there, it's my impression that he was very popular with basketball fans across the board. He could defend and score right up there w/ pretty much any other point guard of his time.

I can't really think of a defining moment in his career though...Seattle had some great teams and went to the Finals once...but was GP a true Superstar? Maybe.

I'm not gonna take the time to look up stats, but I do think he's a legit HOF'er.

You're fucking high. Find me a better point guard during the decade of the 90s. He was the best there was at that position, Stockton couldn't D up or score like Payton.

in his prime, he was absolutely 100% a super star, and one of the top 10 players in the leauge.

All you need to know is the following:
He was selected to the NBA All-Defensive First Team eight consecutive seasons (1994-2001).

Good stuff. Keep it coming.

Maybe I'm just bitter over the fact that we were so good in the regular season there for awhile, and only made the finals once...so we never really won anything in the playoffs.

Oh yeah, then there was the Denver series......ouch.

I think part of the reason the Sonics' fell short in the playoffs was that during a long series, a decent coach could prepare his team to handle their trapping defense.
