I'm not sure it's fair to compare these men (and women) across sports... but I'd give it to Pele. He put football on the map like no other and it's still the most popular game in the world today thanks in large part to him.

As the article itself says, I wouldn't even put Armstrong ahead of Merckx. Merckx rode all year round and won the lot. Lance goes after the tour and nothing else.

Schumacher shouldn't be there. The engine does most of the work.

Sampras... hard to compare players across different eras considering the different rackets available.

Robinson is better than Ali.

Lewis has been implicated in the 1988 drug scandal.

I still don't see golf as a sport.

This leaves Spitz.

Spitz???? I'd put Lance way ahead of Spitz. Each Tour de France lance has won has lasted longer than the time it took Spitz in the olympics; which seems to nullify your point about Lance only going all out for one race per year.

On the page they call Michael Phelps a pretender. Didn't he win gold in all but one race?

I go with Sampras. About your comment about different rackets: the guys Sampras played had the new rackets too. It wasn't like Agassi was playing with a lil' wooden one and Sampras had a new style.

I didn't read the article....but it sounds like we're talking here about tennis, soccer, car racing, boxing, golf, swimming, biking, and running. Throw in hockey & curling, and there couldn't be a more boring group of sports to discuss in a single thread.

Bwa ha ha ha ha.

Single greatest team sport is Greztky without any competition.

Single greatest solo athlete? Babe Zaharias maybe.

Out of that group, I go with Sampras.

what Armstrong does is admirable, but it would be more impresive if he particiapted in other races besides the Tour de France.

That link doesn't mention sampras being ranked #1 for 5 years in a row. His grand slam record might be topped but i don't see Federer ever breaking that #1 feat.

I didn't look at the list to know:

Muhammad Ali

No contest.

Ali was great, no doubt, but him being a 3 time champ wasn't that great of an accomplishment. He won the title for a 3rd time when he beat Leon Spinks in a rematch. Spinks had about 10 total fights in his career and was basically a bum. The fact that he lost to Spinks to lose the title was pretty pathetic. If anything, Joe Louis should have been on that list. He held the title for like 12 years and was a shitload more dominating than Ali.

I knew Clubber would chime in with Pete 8)

Pete was incredible for his sheer longevity but something tells me he probably lacked some charisma to be #1 of all time.

And I full well realise charisma has nothing to do with sporting ability. Just a dumb, human thing I guess but it seems to be important to me.
