I see him getting really close to .400. I don't care what he hits, just as long as the Mariners make the playoffs.

A question for someone who knows baseball better than I--why has the .400 mark been so elusive since Ted Williams' days? Has pitching just evolved more than hitting has?

a couple of my theories:
-smaller parks result in more home runs but less base hits due to less ground for fielders to cover.
-gloves worn by fielders are vastly superior to those worn in the first half of the century.

and if we're talking theories, lets not dismiss today's scouting reports..how many times have you been at a game and seen a switch only to have the hitter hit a line drive up the middle only to end up in the glove of the ss or 2b

nice idea, but it doesn't explain the averages above .400 posted BEFORE Williams.
