So Favre's gonna stick it out for another year (old news - I know)...

But clearly, this has to be his last (in fact, I wonder if he'll even keep his starting record up, though indications are that he's shed some weight and is looking fitter than he has in a few years)...

but anyways... the point is:

What the hell are Green Bay gonna do after he retires? How do you replace a legend? (age old question). And more to the point: who do you replace him with?

It's doubtful that the Pack will finish low enough next season to be able to draft a top QB. So that leaves trades and/or some talent spotting. Personally, I can't see it. I fear we'll have to settle for some 2nd rate QB (potentially one that's already on the books), and tough it out for a few years. Maybe I'm just being too grim?

I think there will be a few lean years in Wisconsin after Favre is gone. One bad season, draft a top QB, a year or two for him to mature and grow a team around him before they're back in the playoffs. After the great run Green Bay has had for the past dozen years, the fans have to be accepting of this fact of life.

The Packers had screwed up looking for Favre's repelacement for a long time--then in the last draft they ended up in a situation even they couldn't screw up--a QB that should have been a top 5 pick dropped all the way to #24, Aaron Rodgers. I think he'll be a fine replacement for Favre, I don't see a problem there.

Where I DO see a problem is around the supporting cast, in particular the offensive line. I think losing both starting guards to FA is really going to hurt both Favre and Ahman Green, who we know is liable to fumbling. Their defense hasn't been stellar, either, especially in the secondary now that they've lost Darren Sharper and Jue. Is Ahmad Carroll more experienced to start after being thrown to the wolves?

It kinda sucks to say this because I like the Pack a little, but honestly I think they're going to have a rough time this year, and perhaps another year or two after that, especially with Minnesota and Detroit getting better.

Aaron Rodgers? Almost forgot about him... A little on the small side and some question marks about his mobility. ie. he's no scrambler like Favre. But mainly he's still really young and it'll probably take some time before we know he can cut it.

Some draft analyses compared him to a young Drew Brees... if so, I hope he produces a hell of a lot earlier, and before we make plans to replace him.

See I hadn't even gotten to this part yet. The thing is that the D probably flattered to deceive last year due to injuries, especially Grady Jackson and I believe KGB missed a few too.

I get the feeling that the offensive line can be coached into disciplined, efficient unit. But yeah, Ahman Green will have to bring back some old form and leave the fumbles behind. Favre's at a point in his career where he needs all the RB yardage he can get.

EDIT:

5 years after Favre retires Green bay fans are going to forget all about him because Aaron Rodgers will have the Pack in the playoffs and hunting for a Super Bowl.

MARK IT DOWN.

Favre's been throwing some pretty terrible interceptions in the playoffs lately, think the new guy can do that?

Yeah, and take it from me... losing winning QB's sucks, bad... the Cowboys haven't had a steady QB since Aikman left and that was over half a decade ago

This is exactly what came to my mind, as well. However, I mostly blame a lot of horrid mismanagement for the collapse of the Fins. A team can bounce back after a legend retires, as long as they have a plan in place and a solid team elsewhere.

e.g. the forty niners, twice.

I hope you're not counting Montana as one of those two. He didn't exactly retire from the Niners, they just felt they'd do better with Young at that point. I can't say they were wrong, based on the results.
