anyone play? anyone have their own horseshoe pits?
i havent played much but at a big cookout i had about a month and a half ago one of my friends who came brought a set of horseshoes and just knocked the steaks in the ground and we played for almost the whole cook out which was from 3 till 11, but we stoped playing at dark which is around 9 here. so after that i decided that i was going to set up some pits. i was wondering though how others pits are set up if anyone has them? i set mine up yesterday but after playing last night i realized that i need to do more work to them. for one i didnt do anyhitng to get the boards around the pit to stay put, i figured that diging out the grass and getting the boards inside the dug out grass would keep them put, but they were moveing alot when the shoes would them, so i got some rebar today that i am going to drive into them. another thing is that i used playground sand and the stuff was real light and even after watering it down a bit we lost about a bag of sand out of each pit after playing for a couple of hours, but i got 4 more bags of sand today and i got all purpose sand instead which should be heavier and should try to stay in the pits better. and i think the last thing is that i just drove the steaks into the ground and they dont stay put to well, when you hit them a few times with the shoes they get to loose, i think they are supposed to be driven into a 8x8x24 piece of wood and then burried in the ground to keep it nice and strong, but i can seem to find a piece of wood that size, where could i find one.
anyway if no one has their own pits then lets just talk horse shoes
i think it was only right but i got the first ringer in my own pits, then i got the 2nd, and even sweeter was that as it was starting to get dark i had one that hit the steak and though it didnt ring it, it did make a big spark and that was pretty damnsweet

i went to a horsehoe league just to watch friends play and drink some beers..they wanted to have a tourny at the end and had 15 guys..i said fuck it and played to even it out (8 teams of 2 players)..the fuckin dude i shot against in the first round was like a ringer machine..i was doing ok but i pretty much had to top his ringers to get points..his last 3 of 4 shots were ringers..
im ok but no master..pretty much every weekend i go to a party in which people play shoes or quates (?? - theyre like little discs with the same purpose of horseshoes)..when i talk to some friends ill let you know exactly how they set theirs up..and they know their shit, theyre like pros

And here come the Quoits references.
see but quoits are a bit different because you dont have sand pits you have quoits boards with the steak mounted on them, so unfourtunatly quoits players wont be able to help with the pit set ups, but pitching quoits and pitching shoes are similar, so even though i havent played quoits we can talk about them as well if anyone wants to

doesanyone think that makeing the oits bigger then normal is a good idea? and as far as playing for real, would that be against the rules?
i think the correct dimentions are 3 feet wide and 4 feet long, but mine are even smaller then 3 feet wide at the moment because of the wood i had to work with, but im thinking of getting a few 8 foot landscape timbers and makeing the pits 4x4, thoughts?

that's what we call'em anyway... you basically have beanbags that you toss onto a board that has a hole in the middle of it... the concept is pretty similar to horseshoes with minor differences... you get the bag in the hole and that is kinda like a ringer... it's a pretty cool game... a bunch of my college buddies have a tourney every year.... good times
horseshoes are cool too, but i just dont see em anywhere, anymore

well i played a few more games tonight, and though i was makeing most of the points from my side of the court its agrivating that i got a ringer in my 2nd game tonight and it was only my 3rd in 8 games, i have so many bounce off but dont know how to keep that from happening.
but anyway ive played 9 games so far and have only lost 3, so i dont think ive done to bad

You have to get a backspin on it.

i just kinda have it flip over once, when i throw im holding it on one of the ends the let it turn over so that the open end heads at the steaks, but i have a tendency to change alot, so im suprized ive been throwing this way both days

If you get the rotation right, you can have it stop exactly where it lands. You don't have many ringers bounce off that way.
