A star player does not have to be in a big market to gain national attention. I hate the fact that people think he HAS to go to NY. Did Lemieux or Jagr play in a big market? Did Gretzky play in a big market? Did Yzerman and Federov have to play in NY to gain attention? How about Forsberg? Hull? They blow this whole big market thing so out of proportion, people act like NY is the only place to gain attention.

And they ignore the fact that no one gives a shit about the Rangers, even in New York, and their players certainly don't get the major attention that those of NY's football, baseball, and basketball players do.

Couple that with the fact that the Rangers haven't made the playoffs in the last 7 years.

the flyers dont even need this kid, anyone who saw a phantoms game this year knows it.

edit: do all teams have an equal opportunity in the lotter?

A couple of things: 1) Detroit is a big market (especially in terms of hockey), and 2) this guy going to a market like New York is not necessarily a means of promoting the player but, rather, the franchise and, in turn, the sport itself. It certainly doesn't hurt when the largest TV market in the country has a hockey team with Crosby on it. It generates more revenue and becomes a means to re-introduce people to the game of hockey. It's also an excuse for ESPN (or whatever channel even shows hockey now) to televise Rangers' games nationally.

No. I think the way it works is kind of like the NBA lottery, where teams with the worst records have more ping pong balls. The maximum number of balls a team can have is three. The Rangers, Pens, Sabres, and Blue Jackets all have three.

Do they freeze the ping pong balls?

What? maybe make the game more popular in NY, who in the rest of the country or Canada gives a fuck about the Rangers or are gonna watch the Rangers because they are on ESPN? The NHL might gain some fans in NY if this kid end up there, but I know that the rest of the countries wont give a shit that he is on the Rangers as opposed to any other team.

If I'm gonna watch a game to check out one player what the hell does it matter if he plays for the Rangers, the Stars, the Hurricanes or the Canucks? The answer is is doesn't matter. When Selanne played for the Ducks do you think I thought to myself "I would watch this kid if he played for the Rangers but fuck it, he plays for the Ducks so I'm not tuning in". It just doesn't happen. It's ludicrous to think that having this kid in a rangers uniform will help the league anywhere other than NY......and it wont help much there because nobody really cares about the Rangers.

This pretty much explains the whole process. League meets at 2pm to ratify the new CBA, and rules changes, with the lottery at 4pm EST.

That's what I'm talking about . . . making the game more popular in your largest television market. It has to start somewhere. Plus, leagues like the NBA and NHL need a New York market. It's the same reason being are bitching that Stearn bends over backwards to accommodate New York with such crap as the Alan Houston rule where you can dump a guy like that and still not take a salary cap hit (New York would be WAY over the cap -- and it's still in trouble). It's the same reasoning people use to perpetuate the Patrick Ewing conspiracy gossip. The leagues need a New York market.

The league could give a rat's ass about you -- it wants casual fans to become interested in the game. They won't become interested in teams such as Columbus, Altanta, Carolina, Phoenix, etc. They will, however, become interested in brand teams such as New York, Detroit, Colorado, Philadelphia, etc. who they recognize. Those teams, when on TV, will draw people. Give them a reason to watch, and they will. The Rangers, in the past couple of years, haven't given them a reason. Hype Crosby enough, and people will be at least a little bit more interested.
