Many people really don't like the guy (announcer for ESPN and former Reds star), but I've always liked him. And something he said today backed up why I think he's one of the better baseball announcers.

In the 9th inning of the Mets-Yanks game, Arod hit a double down the leftfield foul line, over the 3rd base bag, which advanced Tino Martinez (who led off the inning with a walk) to third. And Arod, the winning run, was now on second base.

Morgan pointed out that David Wright, the Mets 3B, wasn't playing close to the lines to prevent that type of hit. Most announcers would be caught up in the "Arod is just so good" thing. Also, he handled the criticism well, saying something along the lines of "I don't see why they weren't guarding the lines, but every coach plays their defense different..."

The Mets ended up walking Matsui to load the bases, and Giambi hit a 2-run single to win the game. It could be a completely different game if Wright can somehow make a play on Arods double.

I like Joe. Yes, sometimes he rambles and sounds a bit too arrogant. In crucial moments, I think he lends some pretty good expertise, though.

He does say some stupid stuff, but his fat sidekick annoys me more.

What's his deal with trying to pronounce hispanic names with an accent?

I've never seen someone get so excited over a fly ball to center field, like he does.

I was glad I watched the games in the compay of loud relatives

Funny you say that as I was just complaining to a friend of mine about how much I hate the way he pronounces Carlos Beltran's name. He murders Andruw Jones' first name as well. Rick Sutcliffe isn't much better, but I'd definitely prefer him over Jon Miller. (FWIW, my favorite baseball announcer ever is Vin Scully....Dodgers are lucky to have him.)

morgan sucks and is by far the least popular commentator with the players for his pompous ass attitude and acting like he never made a mistake during his playing days

the Red Sox lineup he hated so much 2 weeks ago sunday night scored 10 runs against the Cubs and the team has lost once since

he's better than McCarver, but not by much

can't stand Morgan or his partner.

Miller made Sierra's flyout last night sound like it was going into the upper deck. If he was watching the outfielders (like anyone w/ a clue does when there's a ball in the air), he would have seen Beltran had his eye on it the whole time.

what a clown.

Yeah, I was talking to someone when Sierra hit that and Miller's overreaction made me immediately turn my attention to the TV. Based on his reaction, I thought Sierra had absolutely crushed that ball, Beltran wasn't even at the warning track. And then he said something like "Oh, well, at any park other than Yankee stadium, that would have been long gone!" Wow, thanks for the insight, Jon. Shut the fuck up.

I was wondering about this too. How could he not realize he pronouces Beltran differently than every other person on the planet? If I were Joe Morgan I would ask "Who?" everytime Miller said Beltran.

John Miller is the funniest and most entertaining announcer I've ever heard, and the guy tells great stories. I love the guy. Joe Morgan on the other hand, is one of the worst I've ever heard. It's interesting that they are paired.

if anyone questions his ignorance about the actual game being played on the field watch the replay of the cards giants game currently on espn. there's a play where the runner runs out of the baseline and idiot morgan claims that the runner dictates where the baseline is, which doesn't make a goddamn bit of sense in the first place, but worse is it's totally false. from the major league baseball rule book:

Any runner is out when_ (a) (1) He runs more than three feet away from a direct line between bases to avoid being tagged unless his action is to avoid interference with a fielder fielding a batted ball;

what joe? you pompous moron.

any questions joe? i'm sure you missed this while searching for somewhere it says tie goes to the runner.

as if the home run derby wasn't boring enough, they got morgan and berman doing the commentary. i think i'd rather plunge a rusty screwdriver into my ears than listen to these 2.

WOW

I never relized how many people dont like Joe Morgan as an announcer. I'm always annoyed by the Fuckers like Tim McCarver who add absolutely nothing to the telecast that is baseball related. They act like everyone watching has never seen a baseball game and go out of their way to explain everything.

Joe on the other hand, talks baseball and says whats on his mind. Why this guy hasnt become a manger yet must be a testiment to how much ESPN is paying him.

In my opinion: as good as a 2nd baseman Joe Morgan was, he is a better announcer, and would be an even better manager.
