As a Londoner I'm glad a London team won it considering the summer we've had. The shield matters more though

Yes it is Euro soccer... but for Pete's sake please don't go for Real Madrid. They're like the New York Yankees of football. Although Chelsea are fast taking that crown away.

You'll probably be best of by starting to watch the English Premier League. It's the most accessible. Fast paced, exciting football. Spain is more technical but the defending is just absolute crap, and then there's Serie A (Italy) which is a bit like watching chess.

If the Premier League doesn't peak your interest, then football is probably not for you.

I'd go with Premiership and the Champions League for starters. If you decide when watching the Champions League that the European teams are more interesting, then go for Primera Liga or Serie A.

Don't even bother with the Bundesliga and the Dutch League. They've both gone down the toilet in the last 7-10 years.

Hate to admit it, but I'm forced to go with the Gooner. The EPL is way to go. Just make sure you DON'T go for Chel$ki, otherwise you'll be tarred with that brush for the rest of your life...

And yeah, winning the Peace Cup thing was pretty cool. Doesn't mean anything but it lift morale all the same. It also proves we can live with the best...

no Real Madrid for me....i was thinking of maybe Manutd, i Dled some clips of Christiano Ronaldo....and he looks pretty exciting to watch, and im gonna go for the Premier league for Europe to get my feet wet....i was given a crash course on how it works with the 5 different classes and the Round Robin and how the Premier league is the qualifying for the Champions league and the countries get a different number of bids and all that jazz. Seems like its pretty good stuff. Its all just overwhelming, but i really want to get into it.

If you want to support the Americans playing in the Premiership, keep an eye on Tim Howard at Man U, Brad Friedel at Blackburn, Carlos Bocanegra & Brian McBride at Fulham, Claudio Reyna at Man City, and Jonathan Spector at wherever he's been loaned to.

I'm probably forgetting someone.

Probably.

I think he might enjoy following the likes of Henry, Robben, Cristiano, Gerrard etc. more though. ;)

Eurosnob.

But seriously, I meant on top of supporting whatever team he ends up going for. I always like to see our boys doing well over there, not just those of them at Blackburn.

Spector has been loaned to Charlton for the season btw.

I think I know what you mean but I'm not quite sure. :?

It's not a league which has many bona fide "playmakers"... that is true. The backbone of most successful teams have been defensive midfield and speed on the flanks.

Utd: Ince, Keane---Giggs, Beckham, Kanchelskis, Sharpe
Arsenal: Vieira, Petit, Gilberto---Overmars, Ljungberg, Pires
Blackburn: Sherwood, Batty--- Ripley, Wilcox
Chelsea: Makelele--- Robben, Duff, Cole

You won't see too many Zidane, Totti, Veron type players who get much success in England. Not enough time on the ball (Veron is a great example of this since he was crap at both Utd and Chelsea)... game's too quick.

Having said that, Jay-Jay is fucking awesome...

Hey, you forgot the greatest midfield playmaker of all time and an Englishman to boot.

Glenn Hoddle.

BTW Shades, what do you think of the rumour that Bobby Pires may be off??

Hoddle was a bit before my time. For that matter, we could go into Bobby Charlton, Liam Brady and others too. I caught perhaps a season or two when he was player/manager at Chelsea. But obviously that was at the end of his career. The list above refers to the teams that succeeded in the Premier League.

As for Pires... you know, to be honest, I think he's played his innings at Arsenal. I've never been sure that Arsenal's best team included both Pires and Ljungberg. Both seem to play better on the left. Pires is what, 31 or so now? If he leaves, we've got Reyes and van Persie (assuming he's not in jail for the next 7 years) to fill the gap on the right, and Freddie would obviously revert to his favoured left.

He's been brilliant for us though. Even better than Marc Overmars, and I never thought we'd be able to replace him.
