I read about it, said something like you need digital cable for more than half the games?! The rest will be on MSG. That fucking blows.

The only National TV games wil be on OLN (Outdoor Life/Living Network) through Comcast Cable.

NBC will carry the final 5 games of the Stanley Cup Finals as well.

the difference between watching it on regular TV vs. HDTV is like night and day.

i just wonder if it would be better if they'd put the camera behind the goal. eh, i doubt it'd make much of a difference. it's just not going to be a popular sport in most of the US.

Hockey sucks to watch on TV if you don't understand the intricacies of the game. When I was in high school, I had a friend who watched every single Rangers game, and I had difficulty following it, or finding it interesting when there were only four or five goals total in a game that lasted for nearly 3 hours. Honestly, I learned how to watch hockey on TV by playing hockey video games. Once you can know where the players that aren't currently on camera are on the ice, then the game becomes much more exciting to watch.

But you're probably right as always.

I don't understand why so many people find hockey hard to watch and follow on TV. I started watching at a young age and found it pretty easy to follow. I'm not that big a fan anymore but its because I don't have time to follow it closely anymore and like basketball better. Not enough time to pay attention to football, basketball AND the NHL so it got dropped from the rotation. I always thought hockey was great to watch on tv and the playoffs are still awesome to watch.

seriously, you can take a game 7 of the world series and it wouldnt even come close to the excitement a game between colorado and detroit would generate (pre lockout)

some basic rules you need to know because hockey is so hard to follow

attacking your oppositions goalie, you, doing the attacking, may not cross the red line (offisde line) until a teammate has shot or carried the puck on his stick across the line

or

if the other team intentionally brings the puck back across the line when you are stuck

a penalty does not get whistled until the team who has recieved the penalty touches the puck

well, the extremely low ratings would support me, sure.

also, do you play your hockey video games vertically or horizontally?

i always played vertically, which is a much different view than when the players move left to right, right to left.

i dont find it hard to watch or follow at all... anyone with a brain can understand any sport... i think many of us just find it boring and didnt grow up playing it, whereas most of us played baseball, football, and/or basketball

After a year away, NHL releases TV schedule
August 31, 2005

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NHL returns to TV on Oct. 5 when the Outdoor Life Network broadcasts the opening night game between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers.

The league released its television schedule for NBC and OLN on Wednesday as it prepares to resume play after last season was wiped out by a lockout.

OLN, which will broadcast 58 regular-season games primarily on Monday and Tuesday night, will also show the national television debut of top draft pick Sidney Crosby when the Pittsburgh Penguins take on the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 10. The Wayne Gretzky-coached Phoenix Coyotes will be on the air on Oct. 11 when they face Dallas.

OLN, mostly known for showing Lance Armstrong and the Tour de France, takes over hockey cable broadcasts from ESPN this year after its parent company, Comcast Corp., paid $135 million for the broadcast rights. The cable network -- available in 64 million households as compared to the 90 million that have ESPN -- has a two-year deal to show NHL games.

OLN will also show early-round playoff games, the conference finals and the first two games of the Stanley Cup finals. NBC will then take over for the rest of the championship series.

NBC begins its regular-season Saturday afternoon coverage on Jan. 14. The NHL's two-year deal with NBC for over-the-air broadcasts begins this season. That is a profit-sharing arrangement, a deal similar to what the network has with the Arena Football League in which it pays no rights fee to televise games.

I don't get OLN at school. Fuck that shit.

peeps... i agree... seriously, i love the cardinals and all, but i mean, i grew up going to stlouis games with my grand parents and have always rooted for them... but i cannot sit through an entire baseball game unless it is the cardinals... baseball is extremely boring to watch on television, and i have probably watched about 25-30 hrs of baseball total this entire season... even when i lived in illinois and could watch all the cardinal games, i probably only sat through the entire thing when we were playing the cubbies... otherwise, i'd read about it in the paper and check out the box score because- as youve already stated- sitting through an entire baseball game is comparable to watching paint dry... i'd rather watch princeton take on yale in college basketball than just about any baseball game (other than stlou or yanks vs. sox)

baseball is incredibly dull when it's not the playoffs... especially when your team clinches the division by july

The Bruins are still on NESN. No problem here. I get OLN at home, but not at school, so I'll miss the first round or two of the SC playoffs. I think I can handle that.

Pretty standard across the NHL. Every team will still have local coverage of their games on the local Fox affiliate, or local sports network.
