Dan Wetzel from Yahoo Sports wrote a column today titled "America's Teams" where he talks about the wins by LSU and the Saints this past weekend. Here is a quote from his column:
Quote:
If you can understand that for some of the 340,000 former residents of Greater New Orleans, huddled across the country in shelters, hotels and someone else's living room, the chance to pump a fist about something great happening to a couple of teams representing their battered hometown and bruised home state is more than just a couple of dramatic football victories.
Which is why everyone's favorite team to reach the Super Bowl should be the New Orleans Saints.
And everyone's favorite team to reach the Rose Bowl ought to be the LSU Tigers.
Because who doesn't want to believe in miracles?
Yes, these are great sports stories but I'm not about to pull for these teams just because of this disaster. I was at a party last night in Blacksburg and we were watching the LSU/ASU game and a lot of people were cheering for LSU and I asked why. They said they wanted them to win because of Katrina. I'm sorry but if we are competing for a national championship, I'm going to root against every team ranked above us. And I'm not about to start pulling for the 'Aints to go to the Super Bowl after being disappointed by the Iggles losing it last year.
I was just curious about everyone's opinions about making these teams "America's teams"? Do you want them to succeed? Or is it overkill of the whole Katrina coverage?
I'm just ranting because in all honesty I was getting sick of this while watching football today.

you guys are heartless, how can you not root for the saints? they were trapped on their roofs for days without food and water. oh wait, that was the people of new orleans, not the football team . either way, if you dont root for the saints you are just plain mean. ill be rooting for this team all the way up to the nfc championship game, where they will be destroyed by the philadelphia eagles

I am not a saints fan. I am a Falcons fan but I am glad it gives the people of NO hope.
The problem is still Haslett. NO has the ball 3 minutes left with DEUCE MCCALISTER in the back field and they are PASSING the ball? Why Jim? Why? you are up by a field goal with 3 minutes and you run NO CLOCK OFF ON 3 strait DOWNS This is why the Saints continously suck ass. The shoud have given the ball back to Carolina with about 1 minute left. Instead they get lucky and kick a 47 yarder to win it. Still on of the best backs in the league in the backfield and they are passing and dropping passes. Just seems silly to me.

Hope for what? How exactly does a football team winning a game give people who lost everything hope? I think it lifts their spirits a big, gives them a little joy if they are a fan and were lucky enough to even watch the game. I don't think the Saints winning a game is going to get the city back in shape any faster.

Yeah I'm glad that the people of New Orleans have something to cheer about, but I don't care if the Saints win or not. There is no sentimental value for me if the Saints do well.

i wonder if all those people who were stealing televisions found somewhere to plug them in and watch the game.

If I don't have a reason to root for or against either of the two teams playing, and one of them is from the Gulf Coast, I'd probably be hoping to see them win at the moment.

Is it any different than when they were living without electricity because they didn't pay the bill?
I bet half of them plugged the TV's into a jar of mayonnaise. Sorry Tyrone, electricity does not come from mayonnaise.
Can we turn this into a contest to see who can make a more racist post than this one without using the "n" word?
Jimmac set the bar pretty high with that last one.
i'm trying to figure out how my post was racist.
