Since I consider myself a rather big Jets fan, though my true passion is hockey. I felt I would deliver the every 4 or 5 years annually jet eulogy. I found out the news today from a friend of mine who works with the jets. Jets fans, say good bye to Chad Pennington, though he was never strong armed, he could have been a very effective QB if he had a the health atleast and now he doesn't even have that. Not everyone comes back from one torn rotator cuff, and retearing it is just about the worst thing you can do. Chad was scheduled to talk to ESPN radio today at 5pm, but missed his spot citing "under medical evaluation", rumor has it, he was so upset, he couldn't take the air, he knows his career is basically over.

And the jets are really fucked, Considering they own him still about 55 million dollars, there is no way after whatever insurance the jets have, the cap hit will be huge. But as I speak for my fellow Jet fans, We will survive, we have seen this before, plus a million other bad things in the past 10-15 years. One day, maybe not in my lifetime, The New York Football Jets will raise from the ashes.

If Pennington is unable to complete his contract, aren't the Jets freed from a large portion of his salary? Very little money is guaranteed in the NFL.

I hope he can make it back. I've never had anything against him and thought he could have a decent pro career.

i heard, prior to it being announced as torn, that if it is indeed torn the Jets as well as Pennington have ackowledged it would be career ending.

I think you're mistaken about the salary cap hit. What was Pennington's signing bonus when he signed his last contract? If his career is indeed over, only the remaining (unprorated) portion of his signing bonus will count against next year's cap. I assure you it's nowhere near $55 million dollars. Lucky for teams, and unfortunate for players, contracts in the NFL are not guaranteed.

FYI - I just looked up Pennington's contract. He signed a 7-year, $64 million contract prior to the 2004 season. Unfortunately for Jets fans, the contract included $20 million in guaranteed money. That means if his career is indeed finished (and he's not on the roster next season), he'll count $14,286,000 against the salary cap if he's released (or retires) prior to June 1, 2006. If he's released/retires AFTER June 1, then only half that counts against the 2006 salary cap, with the other half counting against the 2007 salary cap.

Either way, that's a lot of money against the cap. The Jets very well may be fucked.

I think he'll be back but they'll for sure draft a QB. They should tank the rest of the season and you can draft Matt Leinart . Being a huge SC fan and all I don't know if I want him going to the Jets though

A a Patriots fan I revel in Jets misfortune, but it's always a bummer to see a guy with crazy potential who's body simply won't cooperate. It's bad enough when guys waste potential but it's worse when they try but can't stay healthy.
