Sheets gets richest contract in Brewers history

MILWAUKEE -- All-Star pitcher Ben Sheets signed a $38.5 million, four-year contract with the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday, the richest deal in team history.

Sheets had signed a one-year, $6 million contract with the team in February to avoid salary arbitration, but left open the option of a longer pact.

Sheets had back surgery in the offseason, and general manager Doug Melvin wanted to see for himself how the right-hander performed in spring training before opening talks on a bigger deal.

"It is a real happy day in Milwaukee Brewers history to be able to sign Ben Sheets to a four-year contract through 2008," Melvin said.

"It's very difficult to go out and find a pitcher that has the character of Ben and the ability of Ben Sheets."

Sheets was 12-14 with a 2.70 ERA last season, and his 264 strikeouts were the most among NL right-handers.

Sheets, who has a 46-54 career record in the major leagues with a 3.92 ERA and 696 strikeouts, was scheduled to pitch Friday night against the St. Louis Cardinals. He was an All-Star in 2001 and against last year.

He said it was a special day for him and his family.

"I'm glad to be here. Can you believe these crazy people?" he said. "They want me here for another couple of years. Wow!"

The Brewers' new owner, Mark Attanasio, has increased player payroll from a league-low $27.5 million last year.

Until Friday, the biggest Brewers deal was a $23 million, three-year contract extension Geoff Jenkins signed last year, the team said.

I thought for sure he'd be gone before the trade deadline this year. I actually was hoping they'd trade him last season, while he was ripping it up and his value was at its peak. But that was because I had heard rumblings that he wanted out of Milwaukee. But obviously he wants to stay...



Pretty classy guy. The Brewers actually should have a legit ballclub this year, too (as in around a .500 club). I'm sure that's helped his decision somewhat. I don't know what the White Sox were thinking, but getting Carlos Lee for Scott Podsednik was a steal. Now they just need to cut Wes Helms and all will be good. With Prince Fielder and Ricky Weekes only 1 or 2 seasons away from the majors, things are looking up.

I don't think anybody actually dislikes the Brewers... I think it might be impossible... but then again, I found somebody who doesn't like Michael Jordan the other day, so I guess anything's possible

i'm feeling really optimistic about the brewers in 2006. a lot of young talent and the organization really seems to be in a good state with mark attanasio as owner, doug melvin as gm, and ned yost managing. sounds like they're willing to bump payroll up another 7 or 8 million for next year as well -- i'd love to get a big bat at third to help an inconsistent offense.

How's Big Ben's arm? Is it going to fall off?

he'll be ok. but they really do have to watch how much they work him. if it wasn't for missing significant time the past two seasons with ear infections, he'd be going down the same road kerry wood is.

I love the Brewers. I pretty much root for them against anyone but the Cards. They have a pretty good base on which to build, and if they had a bat and perhaps another starter, they are a playoff-caliber team.

If everyone stays healthy.

1 or 2 seasons away? I bet they would be starting next season. They have no one else who can start at 2B and look out for the Brewers to trade Overbay during the annual GM's meeting.

Oakland will take Overbay. He's a weak hitting OBP machine.

Good news for Brewers fans - the season is over.

I wouldn't be surprised if they trade Overbay, but I wouldn't be surprised if they keep him either. He's quite possibly the most popular player on the team (for reasons oblivous to me). I think there's a chance that Carlos Lee could be dealt over the winter. His second half numbers pale in comparison to the first half numbers, and he's a free agent after the 2006 season.
