I just don't get people who like the NFL, but don't bother watching college games(this seems to be one of the few flaws in the sports guy's arsenal). I understand some of the frustration of the detractors. No playoff is huge, it pisses me off more than anything i can think of. The games can last up to 4 hours which sucks if you have something else to do. That's all i can think of though. Why the hate?
College has so much more history and meaningful rivalries. The stadiums are fucking insane. 100,000 college kids packed into a stadium on a Saturday night, screaming their heads off. The crowd is so much more of a factor in the college game.
The players seem to care a bit more. They are kids and 95% of them will never again play football if they are senoirs. It seems to mean so much more to them. These NFL players loaf around and a lot of them could care less about loyalty towards a team or a coach. These college kids aren't making millions of bucks, the majority of them are taking a beating cause they love the game(and a free education, but i doubt that's on their minds during the game).
Also, you have colleges representing entire states. Teams like Alabama, Nebraska, Oklahoma, etc... they don't have pro teams so the focus is completely on the college team. It makes for great drama and tremendous pressure.
Just a rant about college football. I love it more than the pros. maybe the gambling aspect is a big part of it but if that was the case i'd like the NFL just as much. I was just curious as to why some people who like the NFL don't bother watching college or following it

I think it can have a lot to do with the part of the country you grow up in and the college you attend. If you're in an area that's not around one or two big name football schools, you're likely not going to get hooked as easily as someone in Florida, Texas, or the Midwest. I think this is likely the reason for The Sports Guy's lack of interest. Holy Cross isn't exactly a hot bed of football.

Great point, but i still don't get it since i live in NY(with not one good college program) and still love college as much as i do.

You also attended a Big Ten school. I'm sure that helped increase your interest, even subconsciously.

The NFL is better. At least they're paid legally.
that's fine. want to explain why it is better?
Of the Cowboys' 6 games this year, 5 have been decided in the last 2 minutes.
so? did you watch the game yesterday? That was some of the ugliest football i've ever seen. 8 turnovers? It was awful. So was that ugly Redskins monday night game. And i think defense is exciting so it isn't that. They've played some ugly football games this year. I don't see how close Cowboy games makes the NFL better than college

Have you ever gone to a game at Texas U? I would guess it would be a lot crazier than a bunch of 40 year olds at a Cowboy game.
Funny you mention that. My family has held season tickets to UT games for over 40 years. In my opinion, DKR is not nearly as fun/loud as is Texas Stadium. I still maintain that the most exciting NFL game is more exciting than the most exciting college football game. And I saw Baylor upset A&M first hand last year.

But you do follow college ball, correct? Even if you prefer the NFL, you don't completely ignore college, which I believe was Clubber's initial point.

i love em both... fuckinlove'em
nfl over college though, imo
the nfl is way more competitive than college football is... the gap is narrowing some in the college ranks, but it's nothing close to the nfl... you have your big matchups here-and-there, but in the nfl you can lose any game

See, I've always felt that the exact opposite was true. NFL games mean nothing. I mean honestly, what the fuck does it matter who wins a professional game? There's too many games and they're just not very exciting. Half the time I don't even watch the Superbowl, it just feels meaningless.
I'm not really even into sports, but college football is almost beyond a sporting event. Watching a UT game literally makes my heart race. Wins give me a huge high, and losses make my blood boil. The Rose Bowl and the game against Ohio State become truly epic. There's nothing else like it.

Since I kind of fit into this category, I'll explain why I'm in this position.
I love watching a good football game--college or NFL. The main reason I can't get into it that much is because I can never figure out which games are the good games to watch. For example, I watched the Texas/Oklahoma game, and got bored by the second half when the Longhorns blew them out: then I skip the USC/ND game and end up missing one hell of a game. I swear this happens to me every time I try to watch some college football--I get nothing but blowouts.
It also doesn't help that I didn't go to a big university, and that Boise State or Idaho weren't real powerful football teams back then.
The BCS, of course, is bullshit, but that's not a fault of the game itself--just the morons who run it.
I don't think it's fair to say that either college football or the NFL is better than each other: it's all a matter of different tastes.

I really think this is the most important part. I've always enjoyed college sports, but after attending Michigan State I'm now far more enthralled by a game involving them or other Big Ten schools than I ever was before. I've never attended a pro game where I felt the excitement in the crowd that I've felt at Spartan Stadium. Having some sort of connection to a team, even if it's merely being an alum, just adds something emotionally that I never get from pro ball. Seeing MSU blow a game against UofM hurts more than any Detroit Lions loss, and watching them pull off a huge upset gives me more joy than any Lions victory. This goes for basketball and hockey, as well. Watching MSU lose in the Frozen Four to North Dakota the year that Miller won the Hobey haunts me more than any choke job the Wings have done in the playoffs. The Spartans falling to Duke in the Final Four was much worse than the Pistons losing game 7.
I'm guessing anyone who's attended a school with a major sports program has similar feelings.

See, this is where i'm different than State. I live and die with the Colts. I'm so pumped up for this game for some reason. (Shameful plug here, but read the last 2 paragraphs of my column on mostvaulablenetwork.com and you can feel that i was pumped on wednesday for his game.) However, i feel college is more exciting and more pure than the NFL even though i root for the Colts more than i do any team in any sport.

That's not what i was really saying. Sometimes the NFL can be right up there with college on a weekend. Yesterday hd some great games and it was one of the best NFL days i've seen in awhile as far as exciting games. To think that the college games topped it this week just goes to show how amazing this college weekend was. It's defiitely a matter of taste as for what you think is better. I was just curious about the people who follow the NFL a lot but don't bother watching college games. You made some valid points as far as the Idaho/Boise State "home teams" go. I can see where some people would be lost in the shuffle. But it baffles me that some HUGE nfl fans don't even bother watching college games at all. It's the same sport! Plus you add all the points i mentioned in the first post. Just seemed strange to me.
I still maintain that the most exciting NFL game is more exciting than the most exciting college football game.

It doesn't make sense to say not every game in the NFL matters. There are only 5 more games in an NFL season than there are in a college one (and I think college schedules are changing to 12 games soon, aren't they?), and it's not like NFL teams have these D-IAA schools on their schedules. There are no sure wins in the NFL. I mean, if you don't think every game in the NFL matters, maybe you should ask the Jaguars how they felt last year, or the Vikings of the last 5 years after going on massive losing streaks to end the season. If you think the college game is more interesting to watch, then that's your choice. But your reasoning makes no sense.
And trust me, my blood was boiling after the Cowboys lost in the last 4 minutes against the Redskins after dominating the whole game a few weeks ago. It's not like the pro game can't illicit those emotions.
in my two years as an upperclassman at a big ten school, my school's football team won a grand total of two games, i believe.
that's my excuse.
