I know this could be in the NFL thread, but this is a pretty big issue and I think it deserves its own thread.
Personally, I'd love to see a year without a cap. I think it'd be interesting. I could easily see Jerry Jones turning into a Steinbrenner-type in the NFL, and that would mean great things for us Cowboys fans. Parity kinda sucks.

I think it would be an awful move. The NFL is perfect the way it is. No salary cap kills baseball and it would do the same for he NFL. Brewers, Pirates, Royals, Rockies, you get my drift?
Your concerns are valid, but I'm not so sure the same thing would happen in the NFL. With how much more money the NFL generates in revenues and how much the owners have been exposed to success in a parity system, I think the money that would fly would be extremely insane.
And I don't think the salary cap "kills" baseball. It's doing pretty well for itself.

it is? There are like 6 teams in the league that have NO chance of winning a world series. the fans of those teams are getting screwed because there is no cap.

That still isn't exactly killing the sport. The amount of baseball blogs on the internet as compared to NFL blogs should signal to you that MLB and fan support is doing just fine.
That said, I don't see why it has to be that way in the NFL. Most (if not all) NFL owners have had a taste of success in their tenure. What makes you think they won't try to shell out serious money to grab talent and keep it competitive?
I'm not saying it should be uncapped forever, but I'd like to see what its like for a year. I don't think it'd be half as bad as you think. The only big problem would be the players getting a taste of gold and not wanting to go back.

it's not killing the revenue but it's just stupid an unfair to fans of teams like the Royals. What's the point in even rooting for that team if you're a royals fan? I'd hate to see that happen to an NFL teams fanbase. It's a disgrace and taints the league

Is it the league's fault though? The league isn't telling Royals owner (and Wal-Mart exec... so not exactly a poor man) David Glass to not spend money.

The thing is though that it puts all the money decision into the owners hands, and then they can do what they like with it, like the royals owner, who doesnt want to spend which produces teams that dont compete, ever.

The system is fine... there have always been teams on the bottom and there will always be teams at the top... the Royals used to be a superpower, and when they get new leadership/when Glass decides to open up the checkbook (which he has to some extent this year) they will be a contender again. I just think it pays to reward a team for actually having to work to build a contender rather than having the NFL rules basically make you competitive. It makes the whole experience of being a fan much more rewarding when your team actually does win.
The NFL is what it is - the best pro league - for a reason. Doing something like this would be tempting fate, and it would be a horrible move.
For the record, it won't be a "move." The CBA only reaches to 2006, so it isn't like this was something the NFL has been campaigning for. If this happens, it will be because there is enough popular support among the owners and players to keep the NFL from ruling otherwise, not because the NFL mandated it.

I think the NFL is doing things just about perfectly right now in regards to their CBA and would be fools to lend themselves to the trouble of the 3 other leagues.
so say some of the teams splurge on FA's during the uncapped year. Would they then be forced to fit those contracts under a cap in subsequent years?

this has been a long time coming. You need to do a better job of following your beloved NFL!

I think it sucks. I love the NFL now, why the hell would they screw up the most popular sport in the US? Raise the cap a little maybe, don't ruin the system.
It's just as much of a challenge to build a great team under the salary cap, this just gives large market national teams that much more to spend on free agency. The yankees have proven that's not necessarily the best way to go.
I think the NFL is working perfectly for all except maybe the players since no contracts are guarenteed.
Forcing these guys to work under a budget is interesting. You can't go out and consistantly waste money in one position (LIONS) and be successful. You have to balance your income, teams that are successful are well balanced and well coached.
