It's a shame that great players like Messier and Stevens didn't get a proper farewell game. I just hope that Mario doesn't call it quits before the season, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

well if Messier retired 5-6 years ago they way he should have instead of hanging on and taking playing time and a roster spot away from a young kid

he was still a productive player his last few years. He would have made a great checking center on a contender.

I would be really surprised if Lemieux retired... for the first time in quite a few years he's got some good offensive players to play with... plus he's had a year and a half to rest.

There sure are a lot of players retiring this year.

Hey, we've got two years' worth of retirements on the way.

Even as a Flyers fan, I have to admit that Messier was fucking badass for sure. One of the greatest of all time.

Amen the greatest Captain in American Sports will be sorely missed but it is time for the Rangers to go with a long overdue youth movement.

I highly doubt it after watching the MSG Sportsdesk last night and what he had to say, he sounds pretty committed to raising his 5 month old daughter and young son, plus he turns 45 in January.

Yeah, Messier will for sure be missed. Great player, amazing captain and superlative product spokesman. Did they have those Messier Lays potato chip ads in the States?

As for Mario, no chance in hell he hangs them up in the preseason, barring some catastrophic injury. After the Pens signed Crosby, Mario all but vowed to play a few more seasons to mentor him as he develops. Plus, he's got one more chance to Captain the Canadian Olympic team this winter, and he'll be there for sure.

'94 Playoffs....... one of my first, and greatest sports memories was what Messier did against NJ in the Conf. finals
