In Brief: Athletes who participate in sports that require repetitive twisting and turning at speed, such as soccer or ice hockey, may be at risk of developing a 'sports hernia'—disruption of the inguinal canal without a clinically detectable hernia. Insidious onset of unilateral groin pain is the most common symptom. Concurrent pathologies, such as osteitis pubis and adductor tenoperiostitis, may complicate diagnosis. Plain radiographs and a bone scan can aid differential diagnosis, but herniography is not recommended. Surgery is the preferred treatment. Structured rehabilitation should enable athletes to return to sports activity 6 to 8 weeks after surgery.

I don't think it can be isolated to one set definition. Dan Briere and JP Dumont of the Sabres both had the same sports hernia that Donovan McNabb had earlier this year. That was basically described as being a torn abdominal muscle.

It's the chic new injury term.

Just like "high ankle sprain" a couple years ago. Nobody had ever heard of it before, then all of a sudden every team out there has like 5 guys with a high ankle sprain.

The thing is a High ankle sprain is much different and alot worse than a "regular" ankle sprain. On a high ankle sprain you injure the ligament that holds together the 2 bones in your lower leg. They take longer to heal than a ankle sprain and sometimes require a cast and\or a screw. I had one about 5 years ago and it was brutal I had another about 10 years ago that was really bad as well. I sprain my ankle probably twice a year and nothing comes even close to the high ankle sprains.
