I know that the last 2-3 years have tarnished his image and legacay, but there were a good 5 years when he was the only reason to watch the cubs and he brought more energy and enthusiasm to the park then any other player around. Its a shame that his career flamed out the way it did, and im sure there are some cubs fans who are happy to see it end the way it did. But he was my favorite player in his prime and i hope he gets the respect he deserves.

im sure that durring the years with him and mcguire all you haters were lovers, sammy was awesome, its a shame how quickly things went down hill for him, weather it was steroids or just that he got old, he was alot of fun and was one of the last things i liked about baseball before i stoped watching it a few years ago.

I have no doubt he will be a first ballot hall of famer.
But I'm kinda glad he's out of the game, if it turns out to be true.
Corked bat
Steroid cloud
Quit on the Cubs at the end of his last season there
Whiny bitch the past few months
Pretends he can't speak English before Congress
That's enough for me to taint his entire career. I hope the baseball writers/voters agree.

So, is this guy a Hall of Famer? If so, is he a first ballot HOF'er?

he's not first ballot. yeah, he's a dozen homers from 600, but his other stats are not great. i don't think he even has 2,500 hits. his fielding seemed pretty dismal. if it was proven that he never did steroids, i don't think he's a guarantee.

This is the thing with the steroid age -- these guys have huge numbers, but there's an even bigger suspicion among voters as to how they acquired these numbers. Mark McGwire didn't help his cause when he refused to answer questions before Congress. Palmero's fall will obviously influence voters. And Sosa's sudden bout with amnesia as far as remembering how to speak and interpret English certainly left a lasting impression on people.
Personally, I don't think McGwire gets in next year on the first try. I think voters are going to hold the whole era against him. It's the same with Sosa. Sosa's sudden fall from grace certainly corroborated people's suspicions with Sosa. Players like McGwire and Sosa are personal poster children of the steroid era, and the voters will use that against them.

Barry Bonds has the same steroid cloud, is a whiny bitch and gives the media crap all the time, and yet this wont change anything about him being a first ballot HOF'er.
I believe Sosa will easily be a first balloter, even though I'm not a fan of him.

I agree with you on Bonds, because of his numbers, though I hope he isn't. I disagree with you on Sosa, based on the factors I mentioned, and because he doesn't have 600 homers.
And we know Sosa corked his bat, whether it was one time, or a bunch of times he got away with. That's proof that he cheated, if only for one at-bat. That's enough taint for me. Although, so is Bonds' use of flaxseed oil or the Clear or whatever else.
Fuck 'em both.
