What's astounding is the last drive of this game.

Raiders rebuff former quarterback Rich Gannon's offer to help the team

Rich Gannon, whom the Raiders tried to banish from their facility earlier this season, is offering his help to the team and its embattled quarterback.

The Raiders' response?

"It's Rich that needs the help," Raiders senior executive John Herrera said. "When he goes on a radio show offering Mr. Davis help, Tom Cable help, the Raiders help, maybe it's Rich that needs the help."

Gannon revealed Wednesday on his Sirius NFL Radio show that he called Raiders managing general partner Al Davis the day before.

"I did something (Tuesday) that I can't believe even I did," Gannon said. "I picked up the phone and I reached out to Al Davis. So, I called Mr. Davis. I have not spoken with him yet, but I'm happy to help out in any way I can.

"I'd love to help JaMarcus Russell if he wants help. I'd love to help Tom Cable and that organization. It's important. Listen, seven straight seasons where they've lost 11 or more games? Something's not right."

The Raiders have expressed their displeasure over critical remarks about the Raiders made by Gannon, also a CBS-TV broadcaster, in recent years. They tried to ban him from their facility earlier this season for a CBS production meeting before a Raiders-Broncos game. The Raiders relented because of NFL rules requiring such access, but travel problems caused Gannon to miss the meeting.

Russell is in good hands with quarterbacks coach Paul Hackett, Herrera said.

"What does Rich Gannon think he has to offer that Paul Hackett can't contribute, when he said himself that Paul Hackett is the best quarterbacks coach that he ever had?" Herrera said.

In other news, Herrera said the Raiders were aware of Russell's trip to Las Vegas on Tuesday and that it isn't an issue to Davis or the Raiders.

"JaMarcus was in Las Vegas, and he was there with a (Raiders) staff member," Herrera said. "He was there for a legitimate reason."

Russell was excused from the year-end meeting with Cable on Monday for "personal reasons," according to Cable.

It seems pretty awkward and strange to offer a team help with their QB. I mean.... I can definitely see it as being offensive. And offering to "help" the head coach? Just an all around strange thing to do.

Too much history to lose the Raiders (much as I would love it), and the Lions, shitty as they are, are the only thing that people in Detroit have to live for anymore.

I honestly would not shed a tear if the Raiders were contracted out of existence.

Gannon says never mind

Former Raiders quarterback Rich Gannon called Al Davis on Tuesday to offer his help, only to draw a stern rebuke from Raiders executive John Herrera.

Needless to say, Gannon isn't going to push the issue. Here's what he said on his Sirius radio show Thursday when asked if he'd spoken with Davis yet ...

"No," Gannon said. You know, it's amazing. You try just to reach out to somebody and say something, that maybe you can help a young guy, and you get criticized for it. ... I'm not looking for work. I have plenty of jobs that keep me busy. ... People think I'm looking for a job. I've been offered jobs to get into coaching and to get into management. I have no interest in doing it.

"I just was really looking at a young guy that's really struggled and just thought that I could reach out to help him out. Listen, I'm not all the king's horses and I'm not all the king's men. I can't put Humpty Dumpty together again. I can't do that. But I was just looking to figure out a way to go out there and share with them some of the things that helped me as a player and prepare and get myself ready not only for the season but for games each week. I've done it with Aaron Rodgers and I've done it with quarterbacks in Tampa and Minnesota.

"But, hey, trust me, I won't make that call again."

That's fine, just the same. Gannon should know as well as anyone how Davis' sense of loyalty works. He demands unflinching loyalty to him even if he doesn't return the favor (just ask Art Shell). Badmouth Davis once -- like when Gannon was quoted saying they'll never win with Davis in charge), and you're dead to him.

One more thing ... Herrera told reporters Russell was in Vegas for a legitimate reason and was escorted by a Raiders employee. They don't have Tom Cable's back, but they sure have Russell's cover charge covered.

Ladies and gentlemen, behold the wisdom of Al Davis. He tenders his best defensive player after Asomugha at only a third round level, yet he tenders a nickelback, at best, at the highest level possible. Gotta keep those height/weight/speed guys, Al!

I realize I'm late two months on this article, but this one is still too good to pass up. As much of a scumbag as Kiffin is, I still hope he keeps USC up at the top.

BTW, this was written by the same guy who was accused by John Herrera of being a "pot smoking buddy" of Mike Silver.

Lane Kiffin to USC: Al Davis’ head just exploded
Posted by Tim Kawakami on January 12th, 2010 at 8:20 pm

Why did Al Davis ever hire Lane Kiffin on Jan. 23, 2007?

I guarantee you I’m not the only one thinking that tonight, and certainly not the one who feels worst about that fateful decision.

Al is the one who must be in a trance right now. Either that, or he’s screaming into the air, to the rooftops, to anybody who will listen.

Because Al loves USC, above all other sporting entities except, of course, the Raiders.

(He has two former USC head coaches currently on his staff. Al was an assistant for three years in the late ’50s at ‘SC. Loves USC.)

Al loves USC almost as much as he hates Lane/Lance Kiffin. And yet, suddenly, shockingly, Kiffin is the King of USC, the last place and last job Al would’ve ever wanted Kiffin to land.

And Al knows that he was the one who–by accident–started Kiffin down this road. He knows. That can’t feel good.

Al knows that Kiffin used his battle with Al to heighten his own persona (OVERHEAD PROJECTOR!), and that there is no way Kiffin is the inheritor of Pete Carroll’s throne if Al had never hired him three years ago.

This is what Al said the day he fired Kiffin “for cause” and whipped out the overhead projector: “He conned me like he conned all you people.”

Kiffin was the co-offensive coordinator at–guess where!–USC when Al sent his aide down to hire Steve Sarkisian, and Kiffin came along to Oakland.

Surprise: Kiffin ended up as the head coach when Sarkisian said no.

Kiffin never should’ve gotten the Raiders job. He was 32. He had never even been a full coordinator in college, and Al hired him.

Then Kiffin engaged in a brutal air and land war with Davis, tested him, and was 5-15 a Raiders coach when Davis fired him. (I didn’t blame Kiffin for most of this, but it all happened. Definitely a different kind of personality.)

Al’s fault for hiring him. Still is.

Yet Kiffin still ended up with the Tennessee job a few months later, which he also probably should not have gotten.

I think Kiffin did a decent job with the Raiders–better than I expected–and I didn’t mind his battles with Al, since I don’t think any coach can succeed there without some independence. But that does not lead me to believe Kiffin was a strong and proper candidate for the Tennessee job.

And now, 14 months and a 7-6 record later, Kiffin has the USC job.

Oh, he also got himself into many skirmishes with other SEC coaches (especially Florida’s Urban Meyer) and the NCAA rulebook at Tennessee.

Yep, with the NCAA possibly ready to take a hard look at USC’s potential infractions, Lane Kiffin is just the guy you want to bring in to clean everything up!

Incredible. Just incredible. I don’t even want get into what Volunteer officials must be thinking about taking a risk on Kiffin… only to see him walk away a year later.

Or the Tennessee players who came to Knoxville to play for him and his father, Monte Kiffin.

I guess the timing was right for Kiffin–USC couldn’t land Sarkisian, Mike Riley, Jack Del Rio, Jeff Fisher and probably a few others. USC has the NCAA thing looming.

Apparently, AD Mike Garrett balked at his next-best options: Steve Mariucci or Herm Edwards.

So…

Just like with the Raiders three years ago, somehow, Kiffin made himself the right guy for a stunning situation.

And Al Davis has to be just sick about it. He can’t root for USC to lose, because he loves the program. He can’t root fo USC to win, because that would give Kiffin greater glory.

So yes, Al’s blasts at Kiffin are vindicated in many ways by this slippery move. But Al doesn’t care about vindication, if it means Kiffin is getting paid huge money to coach Al’s favorite college team.

I admit it: I feel for Al tonight. He got tricked, he still has a lousy team, and Kiffin has one of the best jobs in football.

McNabb knows what's up. :bammer:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=j ... rade040410

Quote:
McNabb, who is in the final year of his deal, made this happen by making it clear he wasn’t going anywhere else but Washington. When the Buffalo Bills expressed interest – and even were willing to give McNabb a contract extension – he passed on the offer. When the Oakland Raiders sniffed around and showed willingness to trade for the quarterback without an extension, McNabb indicated to the Eagles through his associates that he’d retire.

“He has plenty of money,” the source close to McNabb said. “He’s not doing anything he doesn’t want to do.”

Oh, and Tomlinson agrees.

Quote:
DP: You'd never play for the Raiders?
LT: No

DP: Even if it was a great offer?
LT: Yeah, even if it was a great offer. The things we built here in San Diego going against the Raiders -- we beat them 12, 13 straight times. I couldn't just go to the other side.

DP: What if that's the only offer, that or retire?
DP: I'm retiring.

Here's a nice covert burn by Peter King:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/w ... index.html

Peter King wrote:
As for Roethlisberger, he's lucky the Steelers have a different morality standard for their star quarterback than for their Super Bowl MVP receiver. They could have traded Roethlisberger to Oakland, and if you think I'm kidding, you don't know Al Davis. But as angry as they obviously are with him, they're going to back him, assuming he turns his life around.
