Raiders expected to cut JaMarcus Russell soon
Aaron Wilson

April 26, 2010, 10:47 AM EST

With the news that the Oakland Raiders are poised to release disappointing former top overall pick JaMarcus Russell, we're hearing some details about where Russell stands from a conditioning standpoint.

And it's not a positive development.

According to a league source with knowledge of the situation in Oakland, the hefty quarterback has beefed up to 300 pounds.

We're also told that the former LSU star isn't getting good advice from his family.

"It's a drag on the kid and they encourage his poor lifestyle," an NFL source told National Football Post.

We're told that Russell receives strong, positive support from his mother and grandmother. He has a tattoo of both women on his arm.

With Russell's big contract, lack of conditioning, the acquisition of Jason Campbell and the presence of Kyle Boller and Bruce Gradkowski, the handwriting is carved into the wall on this one.

Normally I'd say that the only team left to take your fat ass is the Raiders, but in this case...

Former Raiders pile on JaMarcus Russell
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on May 4, 2010 4:54 PM ET
JaMarcus Russell is still an Oakland Raider, but his impending absence has empowered some of his former teammates to speak openly about the No. 1 overall pick.

Here are some highlights of a recent Outside the Lines episode focusing on Russell, compiled by the San Francisco Chronicle and clips from ESPN.

1. Dominic Rhodes said Russell would often fall asleep in meetings: "Is that the guy that's going to lead us? . . . I don't think he has that mindset to be great."

2. An anonymous ex-coach said Russell was a "binge eater."

3. Former Raider offensive lineman Jeremy Newberry said Russell was way out of shape and "more comfortable with a role as a backup."

4. Former Raiders quarterback Andrew Walter blamed the Raiders some: ""If he was drafted by somebody else, it could be completely different," Walter said.

Other than that, the report was fairly positive.

I do realize that you did not want to draft JaMarcus Russell. He is a great player. Get over it and coach this team on the field; that is what you were hired to do. We can win with this team!

Lane Kiffin was a bad idea too.

Russell as a Raider, in one handy stat: $100,000 per completion
By MJD

As he seeks an employment situation better than the one he had in Oakland (pro: the possibly deranged owner really believed in him; con: everything else), I really don't want to pile on JaMarcus Russell(notes).

But Sam Farmer of the Los Angeles Times went to the trouble of crunching JaMarcus's financial numbers alongside his actual on-field production. So, just as one final recap of the mercifully dead JaMarcus Russell era in Oakland, I'll pass these along. Here's how JaMarcus was compensated for his production with the Oakland Raiders:

Roughly $100,000 per completion and $5.6 million per win.

For comparison's sake, Tom Brady's(notes) total salary last year was $8,007,280, which comes out to $21,583 per completion. Peyton Manning(notes) pocketed $14,005,720 last year, and made $35,638 per completion. They're all ridiculous numbers, but no one's are more ridiculous than those of JaMarcus Russell.

JaMarcus Russell arrested for possession of controlled substance
Published: Monday, July 05, 2010, 4:30 PM Updated: Monday, July 05, 2010, 4:53 PM

MOBILE, Ala. -- Former Oakland Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell was arrested today for possession of a controlled substance, according to the Mobile County Sheriff's Office.

The substance was codeine syrup, spokeswoman Lori Myles said.

Myles said Russell was arrested at his home early this afternoon during an undercover investigation. He was booked into Mobile Metro Jail at 4:22 p.m. Russell was released minutes later after making $2,500 bail, according to online records.

Russell is scheduled to appear in court on July 20. A bond hearing is set for July 7.

Russell played high school football at Williamson High School in Mobile. He played quarterback for LSU from 2003 to 2006 and was the No. 1 draft pick for the Raiders in 2007.

Russell went 7-18 as a starting QB. The Raiders released Russell last May.

JaMarcus Russell Currently Failing Drug Test

August 23, 2010 | ISSUE 46•33

LOS ANGELES—Former Raiders quarterback JaMarcus Russell is currently in a Los Angeles Police Department bathroom failing a drug test, records will confirm Wednesday when the urine sample undergoes its initial toxicology screening. "I don't even know why I'm doing this. I'm totally clean now," Russell said moments ago from behind a closed bathroom-stall door while excreting urea containing high levels of marijuana, OxyContin, cocaine, and methamphetamine. "This is total bullshit, I'm telling you. Ah, shoot! Damn it, my shoes… Hey, man, can you slip me some paper towels? Got a bit of a situation in here." At press time, Russell asked to take the test again after purchasing a bottle of Gatorade he was trying to conceal in his left jacket pocket.

Report: Al Davis overrules decision to cut Mike Mitchell
Posted by Gregg Rosenthal on September 5, 2010 10:09 AM ET
Remember Mike Mitchell? He was the No. 47 overall pick in the 2009 draft, the safety from Ohio University that Mike Mayock and the rest of the nation of draftniks thought Oakland took about five rounds too early.

On Saturday, Mitchell was reportedly the subject of a behind-the-scenes battle between Raiders owner Al Davis and the team's coaching staff. We'll let you guess who won.

Let's back the story up for a minute. 2010 Seventh-round Raiders safety Stevie Brown practiced on Saturday. He spoke with the media about making the team. But when the Raiders officially released their cuts Saturday afternoon, they still had one move left to make.

Here's where it gets fun.

A former Raiders employee-turned Florida radio host Andy Slater said that Brown was going to get the axe on his Twitter page. This was hours before he news came out. He also reported that "everyone in the organization" except Al Davis wanted to cut Mitchell instead of Brown. Davis essentially wanted to avoid the P.R. hit and admit he made such a big mistake last year. (Maybe Davis told them Mitchell "is a great player. Get over it.")

Jerry McDonald of the Oakland Tribune breaks down the timeline of Slater's tweets, which are fascinating. It's hard to doubt him when he nailed the news before it happened.

Apparently the coaching staff pushed hard for Brown, who also has impressed teammates. But after the Raiders couldn't find a taker for Mitchell in a trade, they cut Brown. (Even if they didn't officially mention it on their website until very late last night.)

"Let me be clear, for those tweeting me on Mitchell/Raiders, coaches do NOT want him. Addition by subtraction," Slater wrote.

But as we know, coaches don't always get what they want. Especially in Oakland.

Just another day in Raider Nation.

Dear Al Davis,

Shankitnowski will never be better than Jason Elam. Just admit that you never should have used a first round pick on him.

Your nemesis,

Nick
