As of this morning, he's currently leading (along with A-Rod) the AL in OPS. This HAS to be one of the most unexpected developments of the season. He's also leading all of MLB in OBP.
Torre may have to think about moving him up in the lineup.

I can not believe that he has been playing so well for the past month. he was walking even early in the year but the power surge was a total surprise. I was one of the fans that wanted to just get rid of him - cut him, buy him out, whatever - I could never imagine he would come back this strong.

you're right, early in the year, he was still taking his walks.......but his swing was all fouled up. It seemed his bat speed was ok, but he was missing belt high fastballs he used to crush. Now it seems he's connecting with those pitches......

What's the general feeling on Giambi in New York? I'm guessing it's a lot different than it was four months ago. I've always liked the guy, despite the steriod issue. He seems like a pretty stand up kind of dude. If memory serves, he was one of the only players that admitted using steroids during the BALCO hearings. Is that right?

the general feeling is that it all comes down to production:
if he hits, he'll get cheered.
if he doesn't, he'll get booed.
I don't think too many fans care about the steroid stuff. Most are smart enough to know that there are/were TONS of other guys using the stuff.
By all accounts, he's a really nice guy and his teammates really seem to be pulling for him - but I wouldn't necessarily call him a stand-up guy.
Yes he admitted his steroid use to the grand jury, but the only reason anyone ever found out about it was because it was leaked.

True. Was he the only guy who testified that he had actually used steriods, or was he the only player whose testimony leaked? I can't remember all of the details.

Bonds denied it. I think Sheff admitted he put "the cream" on his knee when he was training with Bonds. I'm not sure who else was involved......

i'm pretty sure bonds told the grand jury he used it but didn't know it was steroids, which is what sheffield said as well.
this is what was reported anyway.
as for giambi, it's one of the most surprising things to happen this year. brian roberts is the only thing i can think of that competes.

I liken this Giambi development to "getting used to" his new body. Now that he's off the juice, he's had to adjust to his new body again. When I was in high school, I was a good golfer, but I was small, and I grew about six inches in my junior and senior years. I took about a year off from playing when I went to college, and the first time back on the course, I was hitting the ball two clubs further than I ever had before. I just got used to my new height and swing pattern. I think Giambi has finally gotten used to his new, less powerful, but still skilled upper body, and he's swinging smart and strong again.

nope. since Piazza stopped using, Giambi hasn't had anyone to buy them from.

oh, i was being ridiculous, but i do hate espn and its ubiquitous insider sections.
here's what he wrote:
Quote:
• Jason Giambi, who right now is hitting like a healthy Barry Bonds, said, "It really took me a long time to get back my swing, my strength and my confidence. That illness last year knocked a lot out of me. I almost had to relearn some things. But it's back now." There have been whispers about Giambi and renewed supplemental help, but he has to take daily medication for the tumor on his thyroid and is tested for medical progress every two weeks. "There [are] still enough medical concerns about his condition," said one source close to Giambi, "that he can only put what they allow him into his body."
