Sounds like a crotchedly old guy who refuses to give up on the dream. pretty impressive. How he got the one at bat is totally unclear.

I feel bad that he didn't make the solid contact that he knows he can make. he seems so strong headed that he refuses to believe that he's too old. So i doubt he'll ever admit that he probably couldn't hit a pro. But he fouled one off which is pretty impressive.

agreed. the article doesn't talk about why he got his chance. Did he just keep talking until he annoyed some manager who was like, "fine let him play." Or was he related to someone? or was it just someone who saw him in the batting cages and thought, that's a nice marketing gimmick.

it's just upsetting that the guy is not even grateful for his chance. he is bummed that he's not getting more cuts. this is the kinda old guy that would chase kids with his lawn mower. or walk into the street and throw the nets into a ditch (yes that happened to me).

I actually saw this on the news, he actually put an okay swing on the one he fouled off. He was hoping for a hit, but how the hell was he going to make it to first base? Maybe he was just hoping to be walked.
Im unsure why he played, but im going for marketing gimmick.

Im not sure this is true...

"Spectators Derek Johnson, 27, already had bought his ticket for the game before knowing about Eriotes. But he said he made sure to arrive on time after hearing about the 83-year-old."

Id really love to know how it came to be. He seems like one of those old guys who always telling stories about how mosquitos were as big as seagulls back in his days and he used to strike Babe Ruth out for fun. A couple more at bats and he reckons he wouldve definately got a hit? I think he wouldve definately BEEN hit, no more.

I'd hate to be the pitcher who couldn't throw it past an 83 year old guy.
