Among the 392 current major league players surveyed, 83 (21.2 percent) voted Yankee Stadium as the most difficult place to play as a visiting player. The numbers back them up: Since Joe Torre took over as manager in 1996 through 2005, the Yankees are 513-292 (.637) at home in the Bronx, where the fans are close to the field and into the action.

2 -- fenway park

The Red Sox have the best home record (38-18) in the majors this season and have won at least 50 games at home in each of the last three years.

3 -- wrigley field

The friendly confines can be a harrowing experience for pitchers, whose fates are at the mercy of the city's blustery winds. It doesn't help that most big leaguers don't enjoy playing day games after a night out on the town.

The power alleys in this cozy stadium serve as a jet stream, a big reason the Phillies rank second only to the Reds in the NL in homers hit at home with 83.

The White Sox' power-heavy lineup is built to win at the "new" Comiskey Park, which has been a homer haven since the fences were moved in before the 2001 season. The White Sox have outhomered their opponents 98 to 77 at home through Aug. 14 of this season.

It's hard to get fired up for a ball game when nobody is in the stands and the humidity is 95 percent, but that is the challenge facing visiting players when they face the Marlins at home. Florida's stable of young pitchers doesn't make things any easier.

10 -- shea stadium

Did John Rocker have a vote in this survey? The constant roar from airplanes heading in and out of LaGuardia can be a distraction, as can the baseball-crazed fans who have been waiting 20 years for another World Series winner.
